Marquise ( Dutch : Markijze ) is a French municipality with 5088 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in the district of Boulogne-sur-Mer in the department of Pas-de-Calais in the region of Hauts-de-France . Marquise belongs to the arrondissement of Boulogne-sur-Mer and the canton of Desvres . The inhabitants are called Marquisiens .
geography
The municipality has an area of 13.46 km² and is located on the Slack River and is part of the Caps et Marais d'Opale Regional Nature Park . Marquise is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Leulinghen-Bernes in the north, Ferques in the northeast, Rixent in the east, Wierre-Effroy in the southeast, Offrethun in the south, Beuvrequen and Wimille in the southwest and Bazinghen in the west and northwest.
The A16 autoroute runs through the municipality .
history
Marquise was part of Flanders until 1346 when it was conquered by the English under Edward III. after the battle of Crécy was raised to the county.
