Saint-Léonard ( Flemish : Hokinghem ) is a French municipality with 3452 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in the department of Pas-de-Calais in the region of Hauts-de-France . Saint-Léonard belongs to the arrondissement of Boulogne-sur-Mer and is part of the canton of Outreau .
geography
Saint-Léonard is located near the Opal Coast on the English Channel . The river Liane forms the western boundary of the municipality. Saint-Léonard is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Saint-Martin-Boulogne in the north and north-east, Echinghen in the east, Isques in the south-east, Saint-Étienne-au-Mont in the south and south-west and Outreau in the west and north-west.
The A16 autoroute forms the eastern border of the municipality. The former National Route 1 runs through the municipality .
history
Before the end of the 14th century, the Flemish name ( Hokinghem ) or a variant of it was used. Saint Liénart did not appear as a name until 1399 . The place was called again with the Flemish name in the 16th century.
