Joseph Louis Martin Saint-Pierre (born August 11, 1983 in Embrun , Ontario ) is a Canadian ice hockey player with Kazakh nationality who has been under contract with the Sheffield Steelers in the Elite Ice Hockey League since July 2019 .
Career
Martin St. Pierre began his career as an ice hockey player with the Guelph Storm , for which he was active from 2000 to 2004 in the Canadian top junior league Ontario Hockey League . He then played in the 2004/05 season for the Greenville Grrrowl from the ECHL and Edmonton Road Runners from the American Hockey League . The attacker then received a contract with the Chicago Blackhawks as a free agent on November 3, 2005 , for which he was only used sporadically in the National Hockey League over the next three years . Instead, the left shooter was mostly for Chicago's farm teams from the American Hockey League, the Norfolk Admirals and Rockford IceHogs on the ice, with the Canadian having started the 2007/08 season at Chimik Moskowskaya Oblast from the Russian Super League .
On July 24, 2008, St. Pierre was given by Chicago in exchange for Pascal Pelletier to the Boston Bruins , for which he scored four scorer points, including two goals, in 14 games in the 2008/09 season. Again he played mainly in the AHL, in which he ran up in a total of 77 games for the Providence Bruins . On July 1, 2009, the center received a one-year contract valid for both the NHL and AHL with Boston's league rivals Ottawa Senators .
He started the 2010/11 season at Neftechimik Nizhnekamsk in the KHL , before moving to Kärpät Oulo in the SM-liiga in October 2010 . In January 2011 he signed a contract with EC Red Bull Salzburg in the Erste Bank Ice Hockey League until the end of the season . The Canadian won the Austrian championship with the Salzburg team in the 2010/11 season .
On July 11, 2011, St. Pierre signed a two-way contract for one year with the Columbus Blue Jackets . After spending the following playing year with the Rockford IceHogs in the American Hockey League, the Canadian signed a one-year contract with the Montréal Canadiens in July 2013 .
In the 2014/15 season he first played in the KHL Medveščak Zagreb in the Continental Hockey League , but moved to Lausanne HC in the Swiss National League A in February 2015 . For the 2015/16 season he returned to the KHL and joined Barys Astana .
In November 2017 he was exchanged for James Wright by Admiral Vladivostok . He played at Admiral until March 2018, before his contract (and the contracts of five other players) was canceled by the KHL due to a lack of salary payments.
In September he was signed by Kunlun Red Star and collected 12 scorer points in 27 KHL games for the Chinese club. In July 2019 he left the KHL again and moved to the Sheffield Steelers .
International
At the beginning of 2017, St. Pierre was naturalized to Kazakhstan and thus received the right to play for the Kazakh national team . With the team he took part for the first time in the 2017 World Cup in Group A of Division I. The team took third place and missed promotion. At the 2019 World Cup of Division IA , the native Canadian wore the Kazakh national jersey again and made it to the top division with the team. Next to him were Dustin Boyd , Brandon Bochenski and Darren Dietz, three other naturalized North Americans in Kazakhstan's squad.
