Montfort-Laval

Montfort-Laval is a family of the Breton nobility .

history

It occurs for the first time in connection with the Norman conquest of England . The progenitor is Ralph Stalre , a nobleman who owned property in both Anglo-Saxon England and Brittany. He was a confidante of King Edward the Confessor , but then joined William the Conqueror , who appointed him first Earl of Norfolk and Suffolk . His son was Raoul I. de Gaël , who lost both counties after an uprising in 1074 and had to retreat to Brittany.

There were the central property of the Montfort-sur-Meu family (formerly Montfort-la-Cane, Montfort-la-Montagne or Montfort-la-Nouaye) and Gaël , which remained the family's home for the next generations. It was not until the 15th century that the Breton lordship of Vitré and the lordship of Laval in the county of Maine and Laval were married, and in 1431 it was made a county. As Counts of Laval, the Montfort-Laval family played an important role in French politics until the mid-16th century. They died out in 1561.

The best-known members of the family are (a peculiarity is that the heirs of the lordship or county of Laval usually only accepted the name Guy when the inheritance began):
