National Park Khao Phra Wihan or Khao Phra Viharn ( Thai : อุทยานแห่งชาติ เขา พระ วิหาร ) is a national park in northeast Thailand , the so-called Isan . The 130 km² park was established on March 20, 1998. Its name comes from the Khao Phra Wihan (Thai: ปราสาท เขา พระ วิหาร , the Thai name for Prasat Preah Vihear ), a Hindu Khmer temple on the Cambodian side of the border.

location

The national park is located in the Dongrek Mountains along the border with Cambodia in the southeast of the district ( Amphoe ) Kantharalak in the province of Si Sa Ket up to the districts of Nam Khun and Nam Yuen in the province of Ubon Ratchathani .

Flora and fauna

Plant species

The park is largely covered by dipterocarp forests and dry mixed forests. The forests consist of Pterocarpus macrocarpus ("Burma Padouk"), Afzelia xylocarpa , Shorea obtusa , Shorea siamensis and the Asian Jatoba ( Xylia kerrii ).

Animal species

In the park live among other wild pigs , cynomolgus monkey ( Macaca fascicularis ), barking deer , sambar -Hirsche, Elsterraupenschmätzer ( Hemipus picatus ), Pycnonotus atriceps from the family of bulbul , greater racket-tailed drongo ( Dicrurus paradiseus ) Small mongooses .

  • some smaller waterfalls: Poy Canal ( ช่อง โพย ), Huai-Ta-Waterfall ( น้ำตก ห้วย ตา ) and Sai-Yoi-Waterfall ( น้ำตก ไทร ย้อย )
  • Khun Sri Cave and Khun Sri Waterfall ( น้ำตก และ ถ้ำ ขุน ศรี ) - home of Luang Sri, who was appointed administrator of Prasat Preah Vihear in October 1940 by the Thai Fine Arts Department .
  • Pha Mor I-daeng ( ผา มอ อี แดง ) - Viewpoint near the climb to Prasat Preah Vihear.
  • Prasat Ton Tuan ( ปราสาท โดน ต ว ล ) - small Khmer temple tower, about 300 meters north of Prasat Preah Vihear.
  • Sa-Trao ( สระ ตรา ว ) - several small ponds ( baray ) at the foot of the mountain. Nearby is the quarry from which the building material for Prasat Preah Vihear was extracted.
