On March 8, 1988, the Bavarian State Ministry for Regional Development and Environmental Issues designated an area of 1,280 km² in northern Bavaria ( Germany ) as the Steigerwald Nature Park . About half of the area are landscape protection areas . The nature park is operated by the Steigerwald Tourist Association and Steigerwald Nature Park e. V.

The landscape is characterized by deciduous and coniferous forest, ponds and viticulture.

location

The Steigerwald lies at the intersection of the Franconian administrative districts of Lower , Middle and Upper Franconia, marked by the Dreifrankenstein . It is located between the cities of Bamberg , Schweinfurt , Würzburg and Nuremberg . In the north it is bounded by the course of the Main and in the east by the Regnitz . The border in the south forms the Aisch , in the west again the Main and in the extension a line from Marktbreit via Uffenheim to Bad Windsheim .

Steigerwald Nature Park vs. Steigerwald natural area

Unlike many other nature parks, which are only vaguely based on the namesake and are often only defined by municipal boundaries, the demarcation of the Steigerwald nature park is based relatively closely on the boundaries of the physical low mountain range or the natural area after which it is named. Deviations from the natural Steigerwald are:

  • The natural area containing the entire Main valley between Steigerwald and Haßbergen while the Nature Park is only up to the main center; in the narrower sense , the physical Steigerwald does not contain the valley in any proportion.
  • The valley of the Aisch from Dottenheim does not belong to the natural area, but the nature park usually goes up above Höchstadt to the middle of the river.
  • The area around Bad Windsheim belongs to the natural spatial main unit Windsheimer Bucht , main unit group Mainfränkische Platten ; the nature park opposite goes up to the Aisch.

National park discussion

The Hohe Buchene Forest in the Ebracher Forest , placed under protection in 2014

Since March 2007, the inclusion of parts of northern Steigerwald Nature Park is the UNESCO - World Heritage program by the reclassification into a National Park controversial Steigerwald. A study by the Federal Agency for Nature Conservation lists those parts of the Steigerwald as particularly worthy of protection due to the very rare red beech primeval forest and the immense diversity of species . Around 11,000 hectares , which makes up almost nine percent of the state forest , are to be converted into a national park according to the concept. Interest of private forest owners, corporate forest owners , the forestry and agriculture and political camps try this especially in view of the loss to prevent jobs.

That is why the former Bamberg District Administrator Günther Denzler (CSU) acted simply shortly before his end of office. On April 16, 2014, he designated the 775-hectare protected area “ Der Hohe Buchene Wald ” ( protected landscape component), which the state government and state forests wanted to reverse. Initially, there was no legally correct procedure for this.

The controversial protected area was withdrawn by ordinance in September 2015 due to illegality. This “illegality” has now also been established by the government of Upper Franconia. This is why the ordinance was repealed on September 1, 2015. According to the legal opinion of the government of Upper Franconia, "the ordinance of the Bamberg district office on the protected landscape component of the high beech forest in the Ebracher forest of April 16, 2014 is illegal, since the ordinance is not covered by the authorization basis of § 29 BNatSchG." The government of Upper Franconia also writes that "the Hohe Buchene Forest is not a suitable subject of protection for a protected part of the landscape". According to the government, it is “not an object lifted out of the landscape, as the law requires. Therefore, the regulation had to be repealed for reasons of the rule of law and also in the interests of legal clarity and certainty. "

Advocates

Bernhard Grzimek is considered one of the first and most famous proponents of the Steigerwald National Park , and the German forest scientist Georg Sperber advocated it. At the end of April 2008, nature conservation associations set up the Friends of the Pro National Park Steigerwald to promote the national park idea together. Nine regional and supraregional interest groups are active in the association, including the Bund Naturschutz in Bayern , the Landesbund für Vogelschutz in Bayern and WWF Deutschland (as of November 13, 2010). Since the beginning of October 2009 the Freundeskreis has been running an information office in the market town of Ebrach .

opponent

Shortly beforehand, the opponents of the National Park launched the Verein Unser Steigerwald e. V. founded. In addition to over 3,000 private individuals (as of July 2010), its members include 17 organizations such as the Bavarian Forest Owners Association , various regional groups of the Bavarian Farmers' Association and the Lower Franconia Forestry Association, plus 14 of the communities in the planned national park area (as of November 13, 2010). Instead of a national park, the opponents are voting for a stepping stone concept of the Bavarian State Forests : The Ebrach forestry operation takes small parts of the forest area out of use and networks the stepping stones distributed over the state forest area via corridors. The remaining forest area continues to be cultivated.

was standing

Former Bavarian Environment Minister Markus Söder saw no future for a Steigerwald National Park as long as it was not supported by the general public. However, this is currently not the case in the Steigerwald, explained Söder at the beginning of November 2010 on the sidelines of the ceremony to mark the 40th anniversary of the Bavarian Forest National Park .

On July 12, 2011, the Bavarian State Government decided against establishing a national park in the Steigerwald. Instead, a center for sustainable forest management has been set up in Handthal . It opened in September 2014. The meeting and event location is intended to attract tourists as well as providing educational offers. The Steigerwald treetop path was opened in 2016 .
