At the XXV. The 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona hosted two hockey competitions. Both the men's and women's tournaments were held in Terrassa , around 28 kilometers away , which is considered the cradle of Spanish hockey. The main stadium was the Estadi Olímpic de Terrassa , an old football stadium that was completely renovated for the games and offered space for 10,200 spectators.

Men's

Germany won the men's Olympic hockey tournament with a 2-1 victory over Australia. Michael Hilgers from Gladbach scored both goals . Thus, exactly 20 years after the first triumph in Munich in 1972 , Germany won the second gold medal in an Olympic hockey tournament. The bronze medal went to Pakistan, which defeated the Netherlands 4-3 in the game for third place.

Game mode

As usual since 1984 , the twelve participants played in two groups A and B, then crossed for the medals, for places five to eight and for places nine to twelve. The participants had qualified as follows:

Great Britain ( defending champion ) Egypt ( African champions ) Germany ( European Champion ) Australia (Representative Oceania) India (runner-up in qualifying tournament) Malaysia (fourth of the qualifying tournament)

Netherlands ( world champion ) Pakistan ( Asian champions ) Argentina (Representative America) Soviet Union (first of the qualifying tournament) New Zealand (third in qualifying tournament) Spain (hosts)

The qualifying tournament took place in Auckland in 1991 . Instead of the Soviet Union , which was dissolved in December 1991 , the Commonwealth of Independent States took part in the men's tournament as a United Team (EUN) under the Olympic flag.

Group A

Australia and Germany drew, won the remaining four games and qualified for the semi-finals.

Ladies

In the women's category, Spain won the Olympic hockey tournament. In the final, Germany was defeated 2-1. Spain took the lead 1-0, which the German Franziska Hentschel equalized to 1-1 with a penalty corner. In extra time, the host Spain's team scored the winning goal.

The bronze medal went to Great Britain, which defeated Korea 4-3 in the game for third place.

Game mode

As in the previous games in Seoul in 1988, the 8 participants played in two groups, then crossed for the medals and places five to eight. The participants had qualified as follows:
