Pogranitschny ( Russian Пограничный , German  Schillehnen , 1938 to 1946 Waldheide , also: Dirwehlen , 1938 to 1946 Wehlen , Lithuanian Šilėnai , also: Dirveliai ) is a place in the Russian Oblast Kaliningrad . It belongs to the local government unit Stadtkreis Krasnoznamensk in Krasnoznamensky District .

Geographical location

Pogranitschny is located in the extreme northeast of the Kaliningrad Oblast , directly on the border with Lithuania . Three side streets meet in town, leading from the Lithuanian Jurbarkas ( German  Georgenburg ), from the Memel neighboring town of Nemanskoje (Trappönen / Trappen) and from the Rajonzentrum Krasnosnamensk (Lasdehnen / Haselberg) . Before 1945 there was a ferry connection to Schmalleningken (now Lithuanian Smalininkai ), from where there was a connection to the now defunct small train to Pogegen .

history

Schillehnen (Waldheide (Ostpr.))

Due to its location on the southern bank of the Memel (Russian: Neman) and directly on the Russian-Lithuanian border, the village once called Schillehnen has lost its former special importance. Between 1874 and 1945 the place was the official seat and gave its name to an administrative district , which was renamed in 1939 to "District Waldheide (Ostpr.)". Until 1922 he was part of the district of Ragnit , then of the district of Tilsit-Ragnit in the administrative district of Gumbinnen in the Prussian province of East Prussia .

In 1910 there were 422 inhabitants registered in Schillehnen. On January 1, 1931, the place expanded when the neighboring village of Dirwehlen (1938 to 1946 Wehlen) was incorporated. The total number of inhabitants was 453 in 1933 and was still 424 in 1939.

On June 3rd - officially confirmed on July 16th - of the year 1938, Schillehnen was renamed "Waldheide (East Prussia)" for political and ideological reasons to defend against foreign-sounding place names. In 1945 the village was assigned to the Soviet Union as a result of the war with northern East Prussia .

District of Schillehnen / Waldheide (1874–1945)

The district of Schillehnen (1939 to 1945: district of Waldheide (Ostpr.)) Included five localities:

Surname Change name from
1938 to 1946
Russian name Remarks
Old Lubönen Friedenswalde Osjornoje
Dirwehlen Wehlen Pogranichny 1931 incorporated into Schillehnen
Königswald, forest
New Lubönen Memelwalde Zelenodolye
Schillehnen Waldheide (East Pr.) Pogranichny

Dirwehlen (Wehlen)

South of Schillehnen is the much smaller village, once called Dirwehlen , through which the side road (27K-105) to Krasnosnamenskoje runs. Before 1945 it consisted of a few smaller farms. In 1874 Dirwehlen came to the district of Schillehnen in the district of Ragnit in the administrative district of Gumbinnen in the Prussian province of East Prussia . In 1910 there were 16 residents registered here.

Until December 31, 1930 Dirwehlen was independent. It was then incorporated into the community of Schillehnen together with the Wolfswinkel forestry department. Renamed "Wehlen" in 1938, the village came to the Soviet Union in 1945 like all other places in northern East Prussia .

Pogranichny

In 1950 the two villages of Schillehnen and Dirwehlen were combined under the Russian name "Pogranitschny" and at the same time assigned to the village soviet Nemanski selski Sowet in Krasnosnamensk Raion . Later (before 1975) the place came to the Chlebnikowski selski Sowet . From 2008 to 2015 Pogranichny belonged to the rural municipality Alexejewskoje selskoje posselenije and since then to the urban district of Krasnosnamensk.

church

Both in Schillehnen (Waldheide) and in Dirwehlen (Wehlen) the population was almost without exception Protestant . Both places, as well as the Wolfswinkel forestry, were parish in the parish of the Schmalleningken Church (today Lithuanian: Smalininkai) and before 1945 belonged initially to the Ragnit parish , later to the Pogegen parish (now Lithuanian: Pagėgiai) in the Memel area (with its own regional consistory) within the ecclesiastical province East Prussia of the Church of the Old Prussian Union .

Today Pogranitschny is in the catchment area of the newly established Evangelical Lutheran congregation in Sabrodino (Lesgewangminnen , 1938 to 1946 Lesgewangen) , which belongs to the Kaliningrad (Königsberg) provost of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of European Russia .

school

Schillehnen resp. Waldheide was a school location before 1945. Since around 1800 there has been a single-class school here, which was also attended by the children from Dirwehlen (Wehlen). The building was completely renovated in 1930. It survived the war, and in 1996 it was already in a ripe condition.
