Primera División (Mexico) 2004/05

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

With the start of the 2004/05 season, the Mexican Primera División consists of 18 teams - as was customary until the 2000/01 season - after 20 teams had belonged to it in the previous season . At a meeting of the owners of the first division clubs , the teams of CD Irapuato and Querétaro FC Gallos Blancos were unloaded for the purpose of reduction. Querétaro played in the 2004/05 season, like Club San Luis as a relegated athlete from the previous year, in the second-rate Primera División 'A' , while Irapuato did not take part in any professional competition this season. The team from Dorados de Sinaloa was promoted. At the end of the season, Puebla FC was relegated and was replaced in the 2005/06 season by Club San Luis, which was immediately promoted again.

The 2004 Apertura championship was won by the UNAM Pumas team, which was second to last in the season's overall table. The champions of the Clausura 2005 were Club America, which finished sixth in the overall table.

There were a total of 306 point games and 28 games in the Liguilla , the Spanish name for the play-offs .

Most games (42) completed the CF Monterrey, whose team was the only one to qualify for both Liguillas this season. In the Apertura 2004 she made it to the final, where she lost (1: 2 and 0: 1) to the UNAM Pumas. In the Clausura 2005 they failed with two draws (0-0 and 3-3) to Cruz Azul, because the capital city had scored more points in the previous round. A total of 15 teams had reached the Liguilla at least once. Only the Dorados de Sinaloa, the Jaguares de Chiapas and the Puebla FC failed to qualify. Ironically, the UNAM Pumas, as the team with the worst points of the entire season to reach the Liguilla, won the Apertura 2004.

This season was the last time the Campeón de Campeones was held between the winner of the Apertura (UNAM Pumas) and the winner of the Clausura (America). América narrowly won 0-0 and 2-1.

The point game round

In the total of 306 point games, 927 goals were scored, which corresponds to an average of 3.03. 552 goals (average 1.80) were scored by the home teams and 375 goals (average 1.23) by the away teams.

The five highest-scoring games of the season, in each of which eight goals were scored, all took place in the Apertura. In just four weeks, between the second and sixth game day, there was a 6-2 win three times; each from the perspective of the home team at the games between Tigres and Monterrey (August 21, 2004), Monterrey and Dorados (September 15) and Veracruz and Atlante (September 18). The other two games on the 10th and 15th matchdays ended with 7: 1; from the perspective of the home team at the games between Tigres and Veracruz (October 16) and Atlante and Monterrey (November 7).

The highest home and away wins of the season were also achieved in the Apertura:

  • Chivas Guadalajara - Atlante FC 7-0 on August 14, 2004 (1st matchday)
  • Atlante FC - Monarcas Morelia 6-1 on November 21, 2004 (17th matchday)

Seven goals were scored in each of the five highest-scoring games of Clausura:

  • Puebla FC 5-2 CF Atlas on 23 January 2005 (2nd matchday)
  • Cruz Azul 6-1 CF Monterrey on January 29, 2005 (3rd matchday)
  • Necaxa - Dorados 4-3 on February 19, 2005 (6th matchday)
  • Jaguares 4-3 Veracruz on May 8, 2005 (17th matchday)
  • Club América 5-2 CF Atlas on May 8, 2005 (17th matchday)

The highest home and away wins of the Clausura were achieved in the following games:

  • UANL Tigres 6-0 Deportivo Toluca on March 12, 2005 (9th matchday)
  • Chivas Guadalajara 0-4 CF Pachuca on January 22, 2005 (2nd matchday)

A special mention deserves the fact that Monarcas Morelia, the team with the highest points of the entire season, started with four defeats in a row and won for the first time on the seventh game day (3-2 against Dorados de Sinaloa). In contrast, the Puebla FC remained unbeaten as the worst team of the season in the first nine games (5 wins and four draws) before their first (home) defeat against Morelia (3-0) on matchday 10.

Tables for the 2004/05 season

Although the Mexican championship is played as a round-robin tournament (there are 18 teams that face each other twice per season in a home and away game), the overall table is not used to determine the champion, but two championships per half-season (Apertura and Clausura) carried out and determined the champions in the Liguilla . The consequence of this mode in the 2004/05 season was that the UNAM Pumas took a disappointing 17th place in the overall table for the 2004/05 season, which would have meant relegation in the German Bundesliga , but actually winning the Apertura 2004!

In the Liguillas (the Spanish name for the play-offs ) of Apertura and Clausura, there were a total of 14 encounters, each played in home and away games. In the total of 28 Liguilla games, there were 12 home and 7 away wins and 9 draws. There were 6 home wins in both tournaments, but there were more away wins (five) in the Apertura than in the Clausura (two). The highest home win in the Liguillas of Apertura in 2004 was achieved by eventual champions UNAM Pumas, who defeated CD Veracruz 3-0 in the quarterfinals. The highest away win was achieved by CF Monterrey in the semi-finals at Atlante FC with 4-2. Seven goals were scored in Apertura's highest-scoring encounters, both in Atlante FC's 4-3 victory at Deportivo Toluca in the quarter-finals and the UNAM Pumas' 4-3 home win against CF Atlas in the semi-finals.

The highest home win in the Liguillas of the Clausura in 2005 happened in the final second leg, of all things, in the encounter between Club América and UAG Tecos, which ended 6: 3. It was also the highest scoring game in the entire Clausura. Both teams were also involved in the only away wins: the 2-0 success of the Tecos in the quarter-finals at Necaxa and the 3-1 success of América in the Clásico Joven against city rivals CD Cruz Azul in the semifinals.

Of the 18 teams in the league round, 15 teams qualified for the Liguillas. 14 teams were able to qualify once for the Liguilla and only CF Monterrey managed to qualify twice.
