history

Barßel was first mentioned in a document in 1330 . The landlord-free farmers in the villages of Barßel, Lohe and Harkebrugge mainly ran sheep and fisheries . In the years 1522 and 1538 there were raids by Oldenburgers , in which the sheep and thus their livelihood were stolen from the Barßlers and others. Therefore, from now on, the population began to make a living by trading in peat . The peat was mainly transported on canals by ships and barges . During the Thirty Years War Barßel was sacked by Hessian troops in 1638. In 1760 and 1857 Barßel continued to grow by settling the districts of Barßeler moor and Elisabethfehn.

1900 the settlements Loher Ostmark, Lohe and Carolinenhof were added to the community. After the Second World War , many refugees and displaced persons arrived in Barßel. In 1957, drainage projects on the Soeste and flood protection were carried out in order to provide them with a settlement area . Over the centuries Barßel - although far from the coast - was home to many captains who traveled the world's oceans. Became known z. B.
