Roberto Mieres (born December 3, 1924 in Mar del Plata , Argentina , † January 26, 2012 in Punta del Este , Uruguay ) was an Argentine racing car driver and sailor .

Life

Roberto Mieres, son of a very wealthy family in Argentina, was an unusually versatile sportsman who excelled in tennis , rugby and rowing as well as in sailing in addition to motor sports . His Motorsport merits to Mieres fought from 1947 in long-distance races his home with several pre-war cars such as the 2.3-liter compressor - Alfa-Romeo or the Mercedes SSK .

Invited by Juan Manuel Fangio and José Froilán González on a “short trip” to Europe, Mieres finished fourth at the 1950 Grand Prix des Nations at the Circuit des Nations in Geneva , which was not part of the World Cup .

When Jean Behra was prevented by an injury in 1953, the Gordini team invited him to start on one of his monopostos . Another fourth place at the Grand Prix d'Albi encouraged him to privately order a Maserati 250F for the 1954 Formula 1 season .

Mieres achieved two more fourth places in 1954, at the Swiss Grand Prix in Bremgarten and at the Spanish Grand Prix . During the Formula 1 season in 1955 , he started his home race in Argentina and was the only driver besides Juan Manuel Fangio to manage alone at the wheel of his car despite the high temperatures. While Fangio's ambition was to win and score the points alone, Mieres had the only opportunity as a privateer. Another fourth place at the Dutch Grand Prix , in which he prevailed against strong competition, rounded off his career. Mieres had become the best-placed Maserati pilot that year - even ahead of Behra, who was rated much higher.

After an interlude in 1957 and 1958, when Mieres tried his hand at sports car races in Porsche at the 12-hour race in Sebring and in Daytona as well as on an OSCA at the Carrera Panamericana in Mexico, he worked temporarily as a works driver for Volvo in Argentina and Costa Rica. Then he finally retired from motorsport. The reasons are not known. Since from then on he devoted himself more to the sport of sailing, in which he finally made it to participate in the 1960 Summer Olympics in Rome, this was probably where his motivation was based.

Most recently, Mieres ran a farm in Uruguay.
