Sagami Province
Sagami ( Japanese 相 模 国 , Sagami no kuni ) or Sōshū ( 相 州 ) was one of the historical provinces of Japan . It lay on a large part of what is now Kanagawa Prefecture (excluding the cities of Yokohama and Kawasaki ). Sagami was bordered by Izu , Kai , Musashi, and Suruga .
The old capital ( kokufu ) was the modern Hiratsuka .
During the Kamakura period , the city of Kamakura in the province was the seat of the ruling shogunate and was therefore the political and cultural center of the country. In the Sengoku period , the main castle of Sagami was near Odawara , but it was mostly ruled by the larger neighboring province of Musashi.
