Saint-Étienne-du-Gué- de-l'Isle is a French municipality with 356 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in Côtes-d'Armor in the region of Brittany ; it belongs to the arrondissement of Saint-Brieuc and the canton of Loudéac . The place is on the Lié river .

history

The place name is a combination of Saint-Étienne and the ford (Gué) over the Lié river. From the 6th to the 11th centuries, Saint-Étienne was part of the parish of Plumieux . In the 11th century the Coëtlogon family owned the place. Eudon I, Vicomte de Porhoët , built a castle on the river bank around 1040. In the 14th century, Saint-Étienne came to the House of Rohan by marriage and gave its name to the Rohan-Gué-de-l'Isle line. The castle was rebuilt in the 15th century. In 1527 a parish was established, which became independent in 1619. In the 19th century, Saint-Étienne consisted of two separate settlements, one at the castle in the north and another in the south, separated by the places Le Guindard and Gas-de-Bois en Plumieux. In 1829 the towns were united to form the municipality of Saint-Etienne-du-Gué-de-l'Isle.

In the course of history, the municipality appears under the names Le Guedelille (1318), Le Gue de l'Isle (1396), Saint Estienne (1490), Saint-Etienne-du-Gué-de-l'Isle (18th century) on.
