Discworld novels

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Discworld Novels is a Terry Pratchett series of novels set on the fictional Discworld . From 1983 to the end of 2015, 41 novels were published , all of which were translated into German. The following is a list of the first German publications, but in the order in which the English originals appeared. Various edited volumes are not mentioned.

Most of the German translations come from Andreas Brandhorst , from “Schöne Scheine” onwards, the novels were then transferred by other translators. There is a section in the article Discworld about the problems in the German translation . As part of a new publication, the novels are successively reworked by various translators.

Classifications and reading orders

The novels set on the Discworld can be roughly divided into the following areas according to the respective main characters:

  • the wizard stories,
    • the Rincewind stories,
    • the invisible university stories,
  • the witch stories
    • Grandma Weatherwax Stories
    • Tiffany painful stories
  • the death stories,
  • the Ankh Morpork stories,
    • the city watch stories,
    • the invisible university stories,
    • the Feucht-von-Lipwig stories and
  • other novels.

There is no prescribed reading order, but it is at least advisable to read the Tiffany-Weh-Pentalogy, a sub-section in the witch stories, in the order in which they appear. If you want to understand the development of Grandma Weatherwax, you should start the witch stories with The Magician's Legacy .

The wizard stories

The main character of these novels is the untalented "Zaubberer" ("Wizzard") Rincewind . Despite or because of his proven incompetence, he survived the most unimaginable events and often had a great influence on the fate of the Discworld. In the Rincewind stories, the other wizards of the Invisible University usually play an important role. Because of his unusual ability to survive, Rincewind has developed into Tod's secret hobby and also repeatedly plays important supporting roles in the death stories.

The beginning of the Rincewind and Wizard series is the first Discworld novel, The Colors of Magic , followed by The Light of Fantasy and The Magic Hat . It continues with Faust Eric , Echt Zauberhaft , Hot Hopper and True Heroes . The final book in the Wizarding series is The Invisible Scholars Club . Fully in the picture cannot be classified so precisely in this series of magicians. The novel Alles Sense! contains an extensive subplot with Windle Poons , Mustrum Ridcully , and the Treasurer . It is similar with “Lords and Ladies”, where Mustrum Ridcully, Ponder Stibbons and the librarian take on important roles.

The witch stories

The main characters of these novels are the witches of Lancre, as if there were: Esmeralda "Oma" (also "Esme") Wetterwax , Gytha "Nanny" Ogg , and Magrat Knoblauch . After Magrat got married and left the circle, Agnes Nitt alias Perdita X joined later . The stories about the young witch Tiffany Weh form a subgroup of the witch series. Your protagonist and grandma Wetterwax maintain a respectful friendship with each other.

The witch stories begin with The Legacy of the Wizard and are continued in MacBest , Totally Bewitched , Lords and Ladies , Mummenschanz and Calm Blood .

The first Tiffany Weh book is Little Free Men , followed by A Hat Full of Stars , The Wintersmith , The Midnight Dress, and The Shepherd's Crown .

The death stories

The grim reaper , as an anthropomorphic personification of death , his horse Binky , his butler and majordomo Albert and the rat death are the central characters of the first death novels. Later, his granddaughter Susanne Sto Helit comes more to the fore. His adopted daughter Ysabell and his son-in-law Mort are mentioned again and again.

The death stories begin with Gevatter Tod , followed by Alles Sense , Rollende Steine , Schweinsgalopp and Der Zeitdieb . However, the order is not very important, since Gevatter Tod also has a direct relation to Rolling Stones and Alles Sense has a direct relation to The Time Thief .

In all disc world novels except for Little Free Men and Steife Prize , Death always has striking short appearances.

The city guard stories

These novels trace the checkered history of the Ankh-Morpork City Guard. The main characters are commander Samuel Mumm and his troops: Fred Colon, Nobby Nobbs and the adopted dwarf Carrot Eisengießersohn . In later novels they are joined by the werewolf Angua, the troll Detritus , the zombie Reg Schuh, the vampire Salacia von Humpeding and the female dwarf Grinsi Kleinpo. Lord Havelock Vetinari , the patrician of Ankh-Morpork, and often the inventive genius Leonard von Quirm , inevitably appear in all Stadtwache stories .

The inspiration for guards! Guards! came Terry Pratchett while looking at the role of guardians in classic fantasy. There they are just faceless henchmen whose main task is to be killed by the hero. With this novel he wanted to “give the guards a moment of sunshine, but then it turned into a whole vacation in the tropics” (quote: Pratchett).

The basic structure of the City Guard stories are guards! Guards! , Bright Bards , Hollow Heads , Flying Torns , The Fifth Elephant , The Night Watchers and Klonk! . The conclusion is a stiff pinch . All Stadtwache novels contain cross-references to previous novels in this series. Even if there is no direct connection, these cross-references make it easier to orientate yourself within the novel cycles. Supporting characters are members of the City Guard in Mummenschanz , The Full Truth , True Heroes , Women's Regiment , The Midnight Dress and Great Steam Ahead . There are smaller appearances in Rolling Stones , Pig Gallop , Schöne Scheine and The Club of Invisible Scholars .

Ankh Morpork stories

At the beginning of the Discworld series, Ankh-Morpork was a medieval city, but over time Terry Pratchett "modernized" it.

The tetralogy The full truth , Ab die Post , Schöne Scheine und Toller Dampf vor is at the heart of the Ankh Morpork novels. Since every Stadtwache novel actually makes its contribution to the history and development of Ankh-Morpork, they too could be classified under the city novels.

Other novels

Some of the novels cannot be assigned to the above scheme, as none of the main characters appear centrally, other stories fit into several categories.

Simply divine, for example, plays in Omnien long before the narrative presence of the other novels and explains the proselytism of the Omnians; this book can actually be read at any point in time, as it is set in front of everyone else and has no direct reference to them. Only in Ruhig Blut is there any greater reference to the story in Simply divine . Another example is Das Weiberregiment , which is self-contained, but in which figures from Ankh-Morpork appear on the fringes, such as Otto Chriek or Sam Mumm . It makes sense - especially with regard to Otto Chriek and William de Worde - to read Das Weiberregiment according to The Full Truth . The chronologically first novel that stands more for itself is Pyramiden , which begins in Ankh-Morpork, but mostly takes place in a Discworld equivalent of Ancient Egypt . Fully in the picture stands between the novels that can be assigned to the Magician series and the Ankh Morpork series.

The scholars of the Discworld

The books The Scholars of the Discworld , The Philosophers of the Roundworld , Darwin and the Gods of the Discworld, and Myths and Legends of the Discworld are not counted among the Discworld novels. These are covered in the main article Discworld .
