Sergey Karjakin ( Russian Сергей Александрович Карякин ., Scientific transliteration Sergei Aleksandrovich Karjakin , Ukrainian Сергій Карякін / Serhiy Karjakin, Sergey Karjakin (FIDE notation); * 12. January 1990 in Simferopol , Ukrainian SSR , Soviet Union ) is a chess - Grand Master , who played for Ukraine until 2009 and since then for Russia . He was the challenger to world champion Magnus Carlsen at the 2016 World Chess Championship .

Life

Karjakin learned to play chess at the age of five and became an international master at the age of eleven . He achieved his grandmaster title on August 12, 2002 at the age of twelve years, seven months and zero days and thus holds the record as the youngest chess grandmaster of all time.

Karjakin was well known in the chess scene from a young age and was invited to top-class tournaments such as the 2004 Dortmund Chess Days. He also took part in man-machine competitions (e.g. in Bilbao 2004) and in the A tournament in Wijk aan Zee ( Corus chess tournament ), which he won in 2009. He was the second of Ruslan Ponomarev while he was participating in the 2002 FIDE World Cup . Karjakin took part in all six chess world cup tournaments from 2005 to 2015 . In 2007 and 2009 he reached the semi-finals and in 2015 he won the tournament. Garry Kasparov named Karjakin one of the future favorites for the world championship throne several times.

Sergei Karjakin received Russian citizenship on July 25, 2009 and has played for Russia since October 2009 . In a later interview he explained this step by stating that he saw no development opportunities for himself in Ukraine and that as a resident of Crimea he had always felt like a Russian .

In July 2012 he won the first ever rapid world championship in Astana . Karjakin got 11.5 points from 15 games, relegating world number one Magnus Carlsen to second place. In May 2013 he was first with 6 points from 9 games in the Norway Chess tournament (Cat. XXI with an average rating of 2766). At the Candidates Tournament for the 2014 World Chess Championship , he finished second. In December 2014 he was awarded the honorary title of "Honored Master of Sports of Russia".

In October 2015 he won in Baku the Chess World Cup 2015 . Against Pjotr ​​Swidler he was already 0-2 back in the four-game final, but was able to equalize in the following two games and finally win 6-4 points after the tie-breaker games . With the finals he qualified at the same time for the Candidates Tournament for the World Chess Championship 2016 . He won the Candidates Tournament and played at the 2016 World Cup as a challenger against Magnus Carlsen for the world title, but lost against him in the tie-breaker. When Candidates Tournament for the World Chess Championship in 2018 , he reached the third place.

Karjakin was married to the International Women's Champion (WIM) Kateryna Dolschykowa from 2009 to 2012 . He has two sons with his second wife Galija Kamalowa (marriage in May 2014).

In March 2017, Vladimir Putin appointed him to the Russian Social Chamber .

Karjakin took part in all six Chess Olympiads from 2004 to 2014 , first three times with Ukraine, with which he became Olympic champion in 2004, then three times with Russia. At the Chess Olympiad 2010 he achieved the best individual result on the fourth board. At the World Team Championship took Karjakin in 2005 with Ukraine, in 2011, 2013, 2015 and 2019 with Russia. He won the team championship in 2013 and 2019 and achieved the best individual result on the second reserve board in 2005. In European Team Championships Karjakin took in 2005 and 2007, the Ukraine, in 2011 Russia.
