List of savings banks in Germany |
The Frankfurter Sparkasse , shortly Fraspa , is a public-sector savings banks and is one of the largest savings banks in Germany . The sponsor is the Landesbank Hessen-Thüringen .
Legal structure
The Frankfurter Sparkasse was created on March 8, 1989 through the merger of the Frankfurter Sparkasse from 1822 , a subsidiary of the Polytechnische Gesellschaft , with the Stadtsparkasse Frankfurt , at that time still as a Free Sparkasse in the legal form of an economic association .
History of the acquired company
Frankfurter Sparkasse from 1822
In 1822, the Polytechnische Gesellschaft founded the Frankfurter Sparkasse from 1822 to give low-wage earners and craftsmen the opportunity to invest their savings securely. The first office was opened on June 12, 1822 in Grosse Sandgasse.
During the Nazi era , Karl Eckardt was chairman of the supervisory board.
In the course of the reconstruction after the Second World War , the Sparkasse built the beehive house at the Konstablerwache in 1953/54 . The Sparkasse has been based in Neue Mainzer Strasse since 1878.
Sparkasse of the city of Bockenheim
The Sparkasse of the city of Bockenheim opened its business on January 11, 1860. This was preceded by a planning phase that had lasted seven years. The city had put in a cash advance of 200 guilders. On the first day, 29 savings accounts with 378 ½ guilders assets were created. From 1895, after the incorporation of Bockenheim , the Sparkasse der Stadt Bockenheim was renamed the Städtische Sparkasse Frankfurt am Main .
History since the merger
On March 8, 1989, the Städtische Sparkasse Frankfurt am Main merged with the Frankfurter Sparkasse from 1822. Since the Frankfurter Sparkasse from 1822 was the larger of the two, the new institute took over their colors blue and yellow. In addition, the Sparkasse was represented by a new logo (diamond made up of three horizontal yellow bars and the number 1822). The shareholders of the economic association were the Polytechnische Gesellschaft with 60 percent and the city of Frankfurt am Main with 40 percent.
On August 30, 2005, after economic problems, the Sparkasse was converted into a stock corporation and sold by the previous owners, Polytechnische Gesellschaft and Stadt Frankfurt, to Landesbank Hessen-Thüringen (Helaba), which has held 100% of the shares in Frankfurter Sparkasse since then. The Polytechnische Gesellschaft contributed its sales proceeds to a foundation.
On July 1, 2007, the state of Hesse changed the legal form to an institution under public law through the “Fraspa Act” , which is solely supported by Helaba. The Sparkasse is thus de facto a subsidiary of Helaba, which, together with the Board of Directors, is the supreme body of the Sparkasse, but is not liable for the Sparkasse's liabilities.
Detlef Hosemann is the Chairman of the Board of Directors , which consists of nine members and has employer (to ⅔) and employee representatives (to ⅓) .

History in the 20th century
On August 7th, 1996 the direct bank 1822direkt was founded as a sales company. It is the first direct bank of a German savings bank.
History in the 21st Century
In 2004 the Frankfurter Sparkasse got into a serious financial crisis. A high need for value adjustments for the 2003 financial year drained the reserves. In spring 2004, the then chairman of the board resigned from his position. After examining the 2003 annual financial statements, the Federal Financial Supervisory Authority (BaFin) also demanded the immediate dismissal of two other board members who were dismissed in October 2004 without notice. Since the previous shareholders could not finance a capital increase, the institute was converted into a stock corporation and sold. In February 2005, Helaba took over all of the shares. There had been political concerns about the sale to a private bank, for which there were also interested parties. In the course of the takeover, the corporate design , which was previously characterized by its own 1822 logo and the colors blue and yellow, has been changed to the uniform Sparkasse appearance with the "S" logo and the color red since May 29, 2006. The term 1822 is retained as a lettering, but it has disappeared from the official language and the product names of the Sparkasse.
Social Commitment
In addition to its entrepreneurial activities, Frankfurter Sparkasse supports social and cultural projects in Frankfurt and the Rhine-Main area . In 1997, on the occasion of its 175th anniversary, Frankfurter Sparkasse established the Frankfurter Sparkasse Foundation for this purpose . The purpose of the foundation is to improve the quality of life of the citizens in Frankfurt and the region by promoting non-profit areas of art, culture and music, the idea of home, monument protection and international understanding, research and science, education, upbringing, sport, nature and environmental protection, health, Welfare, youth and elderly care and religion.
