action
The billion dollar industrial tycoon Ross Webster is doing everything in his power to expand his huge empire ( Webscoe company ) and eliminate the competition. To do this, he primarily uses modern technology in the form of computers . The unemployed Gus Gorman, who gets a small job as a programmer in Webster's company , comes in handy because Gorman turns out to be a natural talent at electronic calculating machines.
Webster wants to secure the monopoly on the coffee market and therefore lets Gorman reprogram a weather satellite that generates storms over Colombia that are supposed to destroy the coffee bean harvest. But Superman can avert the catastrophe and save the harvest. The furious Webster wants to get the steely out of the way for good and enters into a deal with Gorman: Gus should help him produce synthetic kryptonite , but Webster will fulfill his dream - and build him the perfect computer.
Superman's alter ego Clark Kent travels to his hometown Smallville to cover his high school reunion for the Daily Planet . Jimmy Olsen is there as a photographer. On the way, Superman can extinguish a major fire in a chemical plant that also works with dangerous acids.
In Smallville, Clark meets his childhood sweetheart Lana Lang, who now has a son. When he saves little Ricky from a dangerous situation as Superman, this is ultimately the reason for the city to honor the hero in the Cape. On this occasion, Gus Gorman appears in military disguise to present him with an award for saving the chemical plant. However, this trophy is made of the synthetic kryptonite.
Since Gorman had the 0.57 percent analyzed as an unknown substance in real kryptonite replaced by tar , the artificial form has no fatal effect on Superman, but creeps into a drinking brawler who doesn't seem to care about anything and just does what is fun for him. Among other things, he blows out the Olympic flame and straightens the Leaning Tower of Pisa . In this condition he is easy prey for Webster, who, with the help of his lover Lorelei, gets Superman to sustain an artificial oil crisis he created .
Meanwhile, the positive virtues in Superman are reappearing. In a junkyard there is a fight between the evil Kryptonian and his good side, embodied by Clark. The latter can decide the argument for himself and Superman is the old man again.
He then goes after Webster, who fled with his sister and business partner Vera, Lorelei and Gorman to a hidden cave in the Grand Canyon , where the supercomputer, which has now been built, is located. Superman can turn off all defenses and is stopped by the mega-computer. When the latter almost kills the steely man, Gus turns away from the Websters and cuts off the power supply. But the computer reactivates itself, feeds itself directly from the American power supply and is now also rebelling against its builders. However, Superman can destroy the computer with the all-corrosive acid from the rescued chemical plant in gas form.
The Websters are arrested, Gorman rescued and Superman reverses his wrongdoings.
Reviews
The film received mostly negative reviews, earning a 26% rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 43 reviews. At Metacritic , a Metascore of 42, based on 9 reviews, could be achieved.
“Produced four years after its predecessor, this version turned out to be a hodgepodge of self-deprecating numbers and slapstick interludes that did not come together to create a convincing story. Entertainment without claims and without glamor. "
Others
- Superman III was filmed primarily in Canada . The city of Calgary served as the backdrop for Metropolis and Smallville .
- The film should initially be “Superman vs. Superman ”.
- The role of Lois Lane actress Margot Kidder was so small because she had fallen out with the producers and loudly complained about Richard Donner being taken out as director of Superman II .
- Annette O'Toole, who plays Clark's childhood friend Lana Lang in the film, later got the role of Clark’s mother Martha Kent in the Warner Brothers series Smallville, which also affects the Superman / Clark Kent universe .
- The character of "Minnie Bannister" appears in the film. This is a throwback to Richard Lester who was on a BBC radio show in which "Minnie Bannister" was a main character.
- The boy who operates the photo booth (with Superman in it) at the beginning of the film is the same boy who played the baby "Kal-El" in the first Superman film from 1978 .
- Alan Alda was originally supposed to play the role of Ross Webster.
- The way in which Gus Corman illegally transfers money to his account using a computer is known in computer crime as "salami slicing".
- This was the first film in the series in which Christopher Reeve received the largest salary of any participating actor.
- In the film, the composition of kryptonite is determined:
- Plutonium 15.08%
- Tantalum 18.06%
- Xenon 27.71%
- Promethium 24.02%
- Dialium 10.62% (fictitious element, name of the fruit variety Dialium )
- Mercury 3.94%
- unknown 0.57% (replaced by Gus Gorman with tar as found in cigarette tobacco )
- During the scrap yard fight, a poster for the movie Blade Runner can be seen in the background .
- In previous broadcasts on German television, the film was always cut, mostly in the same place. During the "junkyard fight" between the evil Superman and the good Clark, the former drops a heavy scrap magnet on Clark with a heat look and turns to leave. When Clark crawls out from underneath unharmed, the evil Superman comes back and steps towards Clark. Here is a film cut and the shot of Superman beating Clark up is missing. The previous versions start again with Clark kneeling on the floor, who gets a relatively weak knee kick from Superman, is picked up and taken to a scrap press for destruction.
Awards
The film was nominated for the 1984 Saturn Award in the categories of Best Actor (Christopher Reeve) and Best Supporting Actress (Annette O'Toole) . Composer Giorgio Moroder and actor Richard Pryor were both nominated for the Golden Raspberry .
