Mariasdorf ( Hungarian: Máriafalva ) is a market town with 1166 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020) in southern Burgenland in Austria . Mariasdorf is known nationwide for the parish church Mariasdorf Mariä Himmelfahrt, which was built in the 15th century and which also adorns the municipality's coat of arms.

The municipality is located in southern Burgenland in the Oberwart district , about 15 km west of the state border with Hungary .

Diving is north of the core town of Mariasdorf, the other three districts to the east of it.

The eastern municipal area with mine, Grodnau and Neustift belongs to the Bernstein Mountains , the western towns of Mariasdorf and diving are in a somewhat flatter landscape that slopes down towards the Pinka river .

Neighboring communities

Neighboring communities are Oberschützen , Bad Tatzmannsdorf , Stadtschlaining and Bernstein .

The closest small towns are Pinkafeld (8 km west) and Oberwart (9 km south). The next larger town is Steinamanger (Szombathely) in Hungary, which is about 30 km east of Mariasdorf. Even Graz (70 km southwest) and Vienna are (90 km north) within a short time and important goals for commuters from the region.

history

For centuries the place belonged to Hungary ( German-West Hungary ) and since 1921 to the newly founded federal state of Burgenland (see also History of Burgenland ).

Mariasdorf was first mentioned in a document in 1388. In a on May 4th d. J. dated document pledged the Hungarian king and later German Emperor Sigismund the rule Amber including their villages named to the brothers Kanizsai .

During the Middle Ages, the area developed into a mining region with iron, copper and pebbles mining. The ruling Kanizsai family had the Gothic church built for the miners who work here, one of the most famous medieval buildings in Burgenland, which is still preserved today.

In 1849, Mariasdorf was largely destroyed by a major fire.

Lignite mining began in diving around 1870, which lasted until March 31, 1967 and finally became history on December 30 of that year.

Between 1899 and 1913 there was a severe population loss due to emigration to North America.

The previously independent municipalities mine Grodnau, Maria village, Neustift bei Schlaining and diving were part of the community structure Improvement Act combined with effective from January 1, 1971 on the new "community Maria village".

The municipality of Mariasdorf has had the right to use the designation “ market municipality ” since May 1st, 1988 .

Religions

The majority of the inhabitants are of Protestant faith. Around 50% were members of the Evangelical Church AB Austria in 2016 . Less than 20 residents committed themselves to the Evangelical Church HB Austria (Reformed Church). 35% were of the Catholic faith and belonged to the Eisenstadt diocese . 15% did not belong to any religious community.

There is a Roman Catholic parish church as well as Evangelical branch communities AB in all places.

• Parish Church Mariasdorf Mariae Himmelfahrt: The late Gothic parish church Mariae Himmelfahrt is one of the most beautiful in Burgenland. After the Kanizsay brothers had received the Bernstein estate, construction began around 1400 on the site of an existing church, but was probably discontinued in the early 15th century. Until then, there was probably only the choir room . At the end of the century, work continued with the construction of the nave . The west portal was completed in 1490. The sacrament house on the north wall bears the year 1483. The sacristy , ossuary and the two stair towers probably also originate from this construction phase. In the 17th and 18th centuries, the church was rebuilt to adapt it to the Baroque taste of the time. In 1882–1899, these alterations were largely reversed under the direction of Imre Steindl , the architect of the Budapest Parliament , and the building was redesigned in Gothic style. The high altar, the pulpit, the baptismal font and the stained glass windows bear witness to this second, neo-Gothic renovation .

The Mariae Himmelfahrt church today serves as a Roman Catholic parish church in the Mariasdorf-Bernstein parish in the Eisenstadt diocese .

There are no street names in Mariasdorf. Postal addresses are made up of the name of the district and the house number .

traffic

• Road: The most important traffic artery in the municipality is the Burgenland-Bundesstraße (B 50), which runs through the state in north-south direction and is laid out as a bypass road on the eastern edge of Mariasdorf .
• Railway: Since the Pinkatalbahn was closed , the closest railway line is the Wechsel- und Thermenbahn with a stop in Friedberg .

education

The community has two primary schools (in Mariasdorf and Grodnau). The next grammar school is in the neighboring town of Oberschützen, three kilometers away.

Parish council

In addition to Mayor Reinhard Berger (SPÖ) and Vice Mayor Hans Prisching (SPÖ), Klaus-Eduard Jonach (FPÖ), Günter Sorger (SPÖ) and Markus Taucher (ÖVP) are also members of the community board.

Sabine Nothnagel (SPÖ) was elected environmental councilor.

The following were appointed as mayors and chairmen of the local committees: Hans Georg Mühl (SPÖ, for diving), Sabine Nothnagel (SPÖ, for Neustift bei Schlaining) and Manfred Ostermann (SPÖ, for mining). In Grodnau the function of the mayor Berger Reinhard (SPÖ) and in Mariasdorf by deputy mayor Hans Prisching (SPÖ) is carried out.

Mayor is Reinhard Berger (SPÖ), who is also in charge of the municipal office. After the mayor's direct election on October 6, 2002, he succeeded Karl Kreimer (SPÖ). In the election on October 1, 2017, Berger won with 76.84% against Klaus-Eduard Jonach (FPÖ).

In the constituent meeting of the municipal council, Hans Prisching (SPÖ) was elected deputy mayor.
