List of cities in Russia |
Wyksa ( Russian Вы́кса ) is a city in Russia . It has 56,201 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010) and is located in the Nizhny Novgorod Oblast , 186 km southwest of Nizhny Novgorod .
history
Metalworking was still widespread in the area of today's Wyksa in the 16th century, which can be traced back to the iron ore deposits there . In the 1760s, the two Bataschow brothers, previously factory owners in the iron forge town of Tula , took advantage of this and began to develop the local deposits. At the same time they founded a metal processing factory and a workers' settlement in 1767, which was named after a small river Vyksa.
Since then, the place has continuously developed as an industrial city with a focus on metal processing. A wide range of hardware was produced here, including, for example, weapons, tools, sheet metal, pipes, but also iron bars, which were also used in the design of Moscow's Alexander Garden.
Wyksa received city status in 1934; some years before it became the administrative center of a Rajons of Nizhny Novgorod Oblast.
In early August 2010, the city was damaged in the forest fires in the Nizhny Novgorod Oblast.
