Location and economy

The main source of income is tourism : Marken is even a tourist destination known worldwide. There is also some industry in Monnickendam, including a shipyard. Livestock farming is also important (dairy products, Edam cheese ).

history

See also the articles on Marken and Monnickendam .

Broek in Waterland originated in the Middle Ages as a settlement in the moor ( broek , nds. Brook, brock , high German Bruch ). It was already a boatman's village in the 16th century. The church was therefore also dedicated to St. Nicholas , protector of sailors. In the 17th century, the place developed into one of the first commuter villages in Western Europe. Wealthy shipowners and ship captains relocated here from Amsterdam. Between 1700 and around 1740, when a kind of rinderpest wiped out the cattle pile, livestock farming was also of great importance, as buyers in the city of Amsterdam paid good prices. Foreign visitors from France , among others, reported in the 18th century and later about the great purity and wealth in Broek in Waterland. There is even said to have been an expression in the French language : Je ne suis pas de Brouck , meaning: I'm not from Broek in Waterland, that means: I'm not that rich . Despite the prosperity, the houses were always built of wood. This light material meant that the houses did not sink into the soft peatland. The Goudriaankanaal , begun in the 19th century, was never completed.

Zuiderwoude , which has existed since the 11th century, had a brief boom in the 17th century, also due to shipping and trade.

Katwoude was an independent municipality until 1991, the smallest in the Netherlands.
