Veronica
Veronika is a feminine given name .
Emergence
Veronika is derived from the Macedonian name Berenike (from the Greek pherenike ) and means victory bringer ( ancient Greek φέρειν phérein , German 'carry, bring' , νίκη níkē , German 'victory' ).
According to a legendary tradition that is related to the Passion story , and which is first handed down in the apocryphal Gospel of Nicodemus , Veronica is a woman who wiped the sweat off Jesus on the Way of the Cross to Golgotha . An imprint of the face remained in the handkerchief (see Veronica's handkerchief ). In Byzantium , the same relic is known as the abgar cloth or mandylion . This relic disappeared at the time of the Latin Empire . At the same time, the famous Shroud of Turin first appeared in the West . According to folk etymology , the name was interpreted as a combination of the Latin vera (true) and the ancient Greek εικών eikōn (image, sign) as a “true image”.
