Wiesen ( Hungarian : Rétfalu , Croatian : Bizmet ) is a market town in the Mattersburg district in Burgenland in Austria .

Geographical location
Wiesen lies at the foot of the Rosaliengebirge between Bad Sauerbrunn and Forchtenstein at an altitude of 306 m above sea level. A. The Rosalia-Kogelberg Nature Park is located in the municipality . Districts are Anger, Dorf, Graben and Wiesen Nord. A little outside are the districts of Keltenberg and Römersee , in which the community has shares, and the Sauerbrunn settlement, which is directly attached to Bad Sauerbrunn.

history
Before the birth of Christ, the area was part of the Celtic Kingdom of Noricum and belonged to the surroundings of the Celtic hill settlement Burg on the Schwarzenbacher Burgberg .
Later under the Romans, today's meadow was then in the province of Pannonia .
The place belonged, like the whole of Burgenland, to Hungary (German-West Hungary) until 1920/21 . Since 1898 had due to the Magyarization of the government in Budapest of Hungarian name Rétfalu be used.
After the end of the First World War, after tough negotiations, German-West Hungary was awarded to Austria in the Treaties of St. Germain and Trianon in 1919. The place has belonged to the newly founded federal state of Burgenland since 1921 (see also the history of Burgenland ).
Wiesen has been a market town since 1997 .

Regular events
Regular events have been taking place on the festival site in the northern part of Wiesen since 1976. The characteristic marquee, a steel cable construction, offers space for 4,000 visitors, an open-air area for another 4,000.Fests such as Forestglade , Sunsplash, Two Days A Week , Spring Vibration , GrooveQuake or the Urban Art Forms Festival bring in a total of over 100,000 visitors the strawberry community. The Wiesen Jazz Festival takes place annually in July.

In addition to Mayor Matthias Weghofer (ÖVP) and Deputy Mayor Josef Habeler (ÖVP), the municipality board also includes the executive councilors Ruth Morawitz (WiP), Martin Müller (ÖVP), Christoph Ramhofer (ÖVP), Alois Robic (SPÖ) and Wolfgang Sieger (ÖVP) on.

Matthias Weghofer (ÖVP) has been mayor since 1991 . In the direct mayor election 2017 he won in the first ballot with 65.36% of the valid votes against Dietmar Rath (WiP, 15.30%), Alois Robic (SPÖ, 11.60%) and Claudia Schweiger-Bollmann (FPÖ, 7.74 %).
In the constituent meeting of the municipal council, Josef Habeler (ÖVP) was elected deputy mayor.
Head of office is Erwin Giefing.
