Suggestions

List new suggestions here, under the date the article was created or expanded (not the date you submit it here), with the newest dates at the top. If a suitable image is available, place it immediately before the suggestion. Any user may nominate a DYK suggestion; self-nominations are permitted and encouraged.

Remember:

  • Proposed articles should:
    • not be marked as stubs;
    • contain more than 2,000 characters (around 2 kilobytes) in main body text (ignoring infoboxes, categories, references, lists, and tables). This is a mandatory minimum; in practice, articles longer than 2,000 characters may still be rejected as too short, at the discretion of the selecting administrators.
    • cite their sources (these sources should be properly labelled; that is, not under an "External links" header); and
    • be no more than five days old (former redirects, stubs, or other short articles that have been expanded fivefold or more within the last five days are acceptable).
  • Articles on living individuals – these must be carefully checked to ensure that no unsourced or poorly sourced negative material is included. Articles and hooks which focus on negative aspects of living individuals should be avoided.
  • Articles with good references and citations are preferred.
  • To count the number of characters in a piece of text, you will need to use a free website like this, or an external software program that has a character-counting feature. For example, if you are using Microsoft Word, select the text from the article page (or, in the case of "Did you know" nominations, this Talk page) – not the edit page containing Wikitext – then copy and paste it into a blank document. Click "Tools", then "Word Count", and note the "Characters (with spaces)" figure. Other word processing programs may have a similar feature. (The character counts indicated on "Revision history" pages are not accurate for DYK purposes as they include categories, infoboxes and similar text in articles, and comments and signatures in hooks on this page.)
  • Suggested facts (the 'hook') should be:
    • interesting to draw in a variety of readers,
    • short and concise (fewer than about 200 characters, including spaces),
    • neutral,
    • definite facts that are mentioned in the article, and
    • preferably cited in the article with an inline citation.
  • Suggested pictures should be:
    • suitably and freely (PD, GFDL, CC etc) licensed (NOT fair use) because the main page can only have freely-licensed pictures;
    • attractive and interesting, even at a very small (100px-wide) resolution;
    • already in the article; and
    • relevant to the article.
    • formatted as [[Image:image name |right|100x100px| Description]] and placed directly above the suggested fact.
  • Proposed lists should have two characteristics to be considered for DYK: (i) be a compilation of entries that are unlikely to have ever been compiled anywhere else (e.g. List of architectural vaults), and (ii) have 2,000+ character non-stub text that brings out interesting, relational, and referenced facts from the compiled list that may not otherwise be obvious but for the compilation.
  • Please sign the nomination with the create/expand date and the name of the creator(s) or creator and nominator, such as:

  • ...that less than two months after showing what would become the dress of the season for Spring 2006, Roland Mouret split from his backers and took a two-year hiatus from the fashion industry? (self-nom) Calliopejen1 (talk) 17:38, 16 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • I know it's a little POV sounding, but I think it's the only way to express this without making it clunky... It's more delicately-handled in the article. Calliopejen1 (talk) 17:38, 16 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • Not long enough (~1360 characters) Thingg (talk) 18:28, 15 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

  • Should have a least one reference for what is written. Thingg (talk) 18:26, 15 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • The present hook is kind of vague and while I realize after reading the article that much is not concretely known about this guy, maybe you should try to come up with a hook that is more absolute and/or definitive (I can't think of any). Just a suggestion. Thingg (talk) 18:23, 15 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • ...that the Spyros disaster is Singapore's worst accident, in terms of lives lost, in Singapore's post-WWII history, killing 76 and injuring more than a hundred? -- Expanded five-fold and self-nominated by Angcr (talk) 09:00, 15 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

  • Good article. However, it may be a good idea to find some references that are written in English as this is the English Wikipedia. Thingg (talk) 17:44, 15 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • I couldn't find the indication that references must be in English in the DYK rules page. Is this something particular of the English Wiki? If I would write this article in, say, Russian, would I have to find references in Russian? and Chinese? Serbo-Croatian? Anyway I'll try to find something in English to add. Fsouza (talk) 18:58, 15 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • I've added a few external links in English that depict the monument. Fsouza (talk) 19:24, 15 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • I apologize for not making myself clear. The article is excellently written, but I thought it might be a good idea to find some English references, if possible, for those readers who, like myself, can't read Portugese very well or at all. Again, my apologies; it was only a suggestion. Thingg (talk) 21:09, 15 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • No harm done whatsoever. With your suggestions I improved the article. Thanks, Fsouza (talk) 22:56, 15 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

  • ...that Stubbins Ffirth drank vomit and smeared bodily fluids over himself in an attempt to prove that yellow fever was not contagious? violet/riga (t) 23:27, 13 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
    • The Nature article mentions the bodily fluids, but does not mention vomit. The other source doesn't mention the vom either. Otherwise the hook is good to go. Was there another source used to write the article? --JayHenry (talk) 08:31, 15 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

  • ...that Singapore is the current frontrunner in its bid to host the 2010 Youth Olympics, on the basis that only cities unable to host the senior Olympics Games are allowed? -- Created and self-nominated by Angcr. Angcr (talk) 08:37, 12 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
    • This page is still under construction as of the date of this post. Gatoclass (talk) 11:11, 12 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
      • The under-construction tag has been removed, as I will not be making any more major changes to the article. Thank you for your reminder. Angcr (talk) 00:58, 13 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
        • Okay, but that hook is not accurate. Neither the article nor the ref. says Singapore is "the frontrunner" or that "only cities unable to host a Senior Olympics are allowed". The ref says only that Singapore is "a favourite" and that an anonymous IOC member thinks it might be preferred because it isn't capable of holding a full Olympics. So you will need to refine the hook to more accurately reflect the facts. Gatoclass (talk) 01:54, 13 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
          • Maybe this alternate version will be better: ...that Singapore has been declared a favourite for the 2010 Youth Olympic Games after ruling out Athens, Moscow and Turin for having been previous hosts of Olympic events and the possibility of an early elimination of Bangkok's bid? -- Thank you. Angcr (talk) 06:43, 13 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
The problem is that your source doesn't actually say Athens, Moscow and Turin have been ruled out, only that they should be, and it's only an unofficial source anyhow.
I would suggest: ...that Singapore is considered a favourite for the 2010 Youth Olympic Games as Athens, Moscow and Turin have previously hosted Olympic events and Bangkok's bid is uncertain? Gatoclass (talk) 07:13, 13 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • ...that the Japanese visual novel True Tears was adapted into an animated television series that is planned to consist of thirteen episodes? (self-nomination) Sephiroth BCR (Converse) 05:55, 12 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
    • Not much point having an article on a specific list of 13 episodes that only cites two of them! I think you will need to add the remaining episodes before this can be considered a viable submission. Gatoclass (talk) 07:35, 12 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
      • Or cite the fact that thirteen episodes will be released, which I've done. Sephiroth BCR (Converse) 20:41, 13 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
        • A "List of episodes" article that only lists half the episodes is obviously only half done. In normal circumstances we might run it but not when there's a backlog. Gatoclass (talk) 14:36, 14 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
          • The list is complete given the information that's available as of now. It looks to me like it passes all of our criteria. --JayHenry (talk) 08:24, 15 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

    • Nice, concise, comprehensive and well cited bio. Only concern is that I can't check the hook as the ref. requires registration, but checkable hooks are not a requirement and there seems little doubt the hook is factually correct. Gatoclass (talk) 08:11, 12 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

    • A lot of the content here seems to be basically duplicating material at Lyari Expressway, so I'm not convinced it's a good candidate. Gatoclass (talk) 05:45, 13 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
      • Of course the road caused public reaction, but the river, its history and contemporary redevelopment without public consensus remains the focus here, and also in the article that brings out the pollution issues as well (with academic refs). --IslesCapeTalk 15:34, 13 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
      • Have made some updates to the article. So, how about the following?
...that Karachi’s Lyari River is the major contributor to the annual discharge of 200 million gallons of sewage and Industrial waste into the Arabian Sea? --IslesCapeTalk 13:09, 15 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
    • Since the source of the second hook is offline, I'll AGF that it's valid. Only one question: Why is the amount of sewage listed in gallons instead of SI units? howcheng {chat} 20:36, 15 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

  • ...that London anarchist subversives Space Hijackers were responsible for the Circle line Party (pictured), an illegal impromptu party on the London Underground? Skomorokh incite 00:26, 11 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
    • Doesn't appear to be substantially new or expanded in line with DYK guidelines, as it was almost 6K bytes on 25 November of last year and is scarcely a K bigger now, if that. Interesting bunch, though, would love to run into them on the Tube! ++Lar: t/c 01:36, 11 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
      • Certainly would be! You are somewhat mistaken about the article however as the old article (25th November) was deleted; this one was recreated with new references. Skomorokh incite 01:49, 11 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
        • See the history... on 25 November, this article was 6K. It was deleted in October 07, well before that. (see the undelete page if you are an admin...). I am sorry but this article is not, in my view eligible. It's also up for deletion again which is another reason not to select it. ++Lar: t/c 19:04, 11 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
          • I'm afraid you're mistaken - the article was deleted in Oct 07 just as I was in the process of adding reliable sources. I asked an admin, User:GDonato, to provide me with the text in November 07 so that I could complete writing the article (See history of User:Skomorokh/SpaceHijackers), which I did on Jan 10 2008, when I moved the article from my userpage to the namespace. The proposed deletion was mistaken as articles that have been previously nominated for deletion are ineligible for WP:PROD. Skomorokh incite 16:35, 12 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Can I get an administrator's confirmation that this hook qualifies? Thanks, Skomorokh incite 16:18, 13 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Do you perhaps mean a different administrator, because I am an administrator. I don't want to belabor this point but articles are only eligible if they are substantially new, or expanded a great deal, within the past 5 days. This material was in mainspace as near as I can tell, back in October, and then deleted. I agree you moved it back to mainspace recently, and apologise for missing that part. Given that it was in mainspace only briefly the first time, perhaps waiving the technicality of it being there before would be fairest. It looks like the AfD is also from about that time rather than recently, so I withdraw my objections on those grounds. However the article has been around since at least 2003 in one form or another. I just am not sure it's really "new" material. This is a matter for the person selecting hooks to decide about, I've made the info available, and they can make the call as they see fit. ++Lar: t/c 02:15, 14 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Cool, I wasn't sure about the technicalities of the matter. Thanks for your diligence, I withdraw the nomination. Regards, Skomorokh incite 03:42, 14 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

      • A venture round is an attempt at raising funds from venture capitalists. I'm not sure it needs to be clarified in the hook since we have an article about the concept, but is the amount of $6 million unusual in any way? If not, a similar statement could apply to any number of startup companies, which makes the hook uninteresting. Please clarify. howcheng {chat} 18:52, 14 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

*...that in a U.S. Court, a man was convicted of attempted murder for shooting at an empty bed? (self nom) Mattisse —Preceding comment was added at 21:24, 10 January 2008 (UTC) **This seems like it needs some more work. Is "Mitchell" a first or last name? Are any more circumstances of the attempted murder known (like why did he want to kill the person)? Which state is the one in the case title? Which appellate court upheld the initial ruling? In addition, I found a number of typos and the last sentence is incomplete: "Thirty-seven states have explicitly eliminated impossibility as a defense to a charge of attemp [sic]". howcheng {chat} 23:48, 10 January 2008 (UTC) :::There is no more information on the case that I can find (and I looked). I only found one source that even mentions that his name is Mitchell - one of my books on Criminal Law. The article is cited so many times legally because of the distinction between "mistakes of law" and "mistakes of fact". That is why it is referenced in every book on criminal law. I will fix all typos. (I just wrote the article today and have not perfected it.) I can remove the article if you want, until the typos are fixed. Perhaps I did not make the distinction between "mistakes of law" and "mistakes of fact" clearly. If I had made the distinction well, then it would be obvious that the relevant facts of the case are there. Why he wanted to kill the intended victim is immaterial to the reason the case is cited so much. More facts of the case are not easy to find as they are irrelevant to the reason the case is important. Mattisse 00:25, 11 January 2008 (UTC) [reply]

Actually, I can just remove the name Mitchell, as many case descriptions don't give names. Would that be better? Mattisse 01:39, 11 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

:::::Mitchell seems relevant to the title of the article, which I found fascinating. Are mistakes of fact and mistakes of law covered elsewhere? Links might be good if they are. People don't understand how case law is built up by these cases, one by one, over time, and therefore why the details are only relevant in so far as the facts contributed to the body of case law. Comment. There are no in-text citations in this article. Also needs to wikified. Manxruler (talk) 22:51, 11 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Comment, there are no inline citations because it was translated from the Spanish article. Are these required for DYK? As well, could specify on the talk page what needs to be "wikified"? Murderbike (talk) 02:31, 12 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Comment, They're definitely preferred for DYKs, cause they make fact-checking possible. I suppose that the Spanish article had citations? There's no problem to use Spanish citations when English ones aren't avaiable. I'll go to the talk page and suggest some improvements, one that would be really good would be an Infobox. Manxruler (talk) 02:52, 12 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Comment, the Spanish version had no cites, and it's pretty hard to find good ones, as the name was used for another, probably more well known union earlier in the century, and I'm having a hard time filtering out all the mentions of that one. I've cited a couple of things to the unions website, but will keep searching for something better. Murderbike (talk) 02:59, 12 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Comment That's good. The most important citation is one for the exact fact that the hook is based on. For an example of a union article that has the right set-up see International Trade Union Confederation. There's a Infobox there you can copy and use for your article, and a good example of citations used in an article. Manxruler (talk) 03:05, 12 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Comment I think you've done a fine job with this article. One question, though, is the first citation in the article a reference for your hook? If it is, then all's great. Manxruler (talk) 06:10, 12 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Comment, actually, it only refs the date of foundation, I was trying to find a really good ref for the "split from" statement, but I think I'm gonna have to settle for something a little less. And to clarify, you suggested "wikification" and then only suggested and infobox. But infoboxes are not required for MOS, so doesn't really fall under the term "wikification". So, unless you meant something else, the term isn't really relevant to this article. Murderbike (talk) 20:42, 12 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • True, true. The article seems very good right now, it has all the required elements. You wouldn't consider another hook? One that there is a citation for? Manxruler (talk) 19:04, 13 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Most of the article remains unreferenced. The Spanish Wikipedia is not a reliable source.--Carabinieri (talk) 19:06, 14 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Of course he means any Wikipedia (not just Spanish). Art LaPella (talk) 01:03, 15 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • ...that the American actor Tom Nolan (born 1948), the star of the 1958-1959 nonviolent western series Buckskin, narrated each episode from the perspective of a ten-year-old boy? self-nom Billy Hathorn (talk) 17:29, 9 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
    • This fact is not stated in the article, and I'm not really sure what the big deal is. He was ten years old at the time, wasn't he? If he had been 30 and narrating the episode from the perspective a 10-year old, that might be more interesting. Also, article moved to Tom Nolan (actor) for proper capitalization. howcheng {chat} 00:06, 11 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • No inline citations. The only source is imdb which is generally not considered reliable.--Carabinieri (talk) 19:09, 14 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

  • No inline citations. All the references in general are to imdb and ibdb, which are generally not considered reliable.--Carabinieri (talk) 19:11, 14 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

  • This article currently isn't long enough for Did You Know. See #Suggestions for details. Also, another candidate for the longest siege in history is described here as follows (click "Search in this book"): "The Moors often beseiged Ceuta. one such investment beginning in 1674 lasting 26 years." Art LaPella (talk) 02:26, 8 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • Neither one of the two articles has any in-text citations. Manxruler (talk) 00:37, 12 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
That is correct, but both are translations (the Grundtvig one is interwiki translation of the week or something). In-line citations are not a requirement for DYK, judging from observation. athinaios | Talk 11:04, 12 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • ...that the Loch Ness Monster, Moa and Bigfoot are all cryptids? -- Article expanded fivefold on January 7, 2008. Not an entirely enthralling DYK, but it's short, will gain an audience for its topic and can easily be rewritten if you want. Cheers, Spawn Man (talk) 07:31, 7 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
    • Again, this looks kind of like a duplicate or possible merge to Cryptozoology. Not convinced we need an article on "Cryptids" per se. Gatoclass (talk) 13:13, 12 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
