The voiced velar plosive (a voiced at the rear dorsum educated plosive ) has the following in different languages phonetic and orthographic realizations:
- German [ ɡ ] : G, g
- English [ ɡ ] : G, g
- French [ ɡ ] : G, g before a, o, u and consonant (except gn ).
- Italian [ ɡ ] : G, g before a, o, u and consonant (except gn and gl ).
- Russian : Г, г
- Spanish : Corresponds to g in the combinations ga, go, gu, gue and gui in the absolute initial sound or after a nasal (in other places voiced velar fricative ).
The IPA character used (Unicode U + 0261 LATIN SMALL LETTER SCRIPT G) differs from the "normal" lowercase letter g (Unicode U + 0067 LATIN SMALL LETTER G) in that the normal lowercase letter, depending on the font, has a glyph of the form with can be displayed with an open descender or with a closed descender. The IPA symbol always appears in the first form.
