Aachen Children's and Youth Book Weeks
The Aachen Children's and Young People's Book Weeks are an independent literary event that has offered an extensive program every year since 1994 with around twenty author readings , workshops , theater performances and the like. With around 2000 young participants, the children's and young people's book weeks are the largest extracurricular measure to promote reading in and around Aachen .
concept
The morning events are mainly aimed at school classes , but traditionally there are also evening and weekend events for children and parents. In the public library there is an exhibition with works by a children's book illustrator .
In contrast to similar series of events in other cities, the Aachen Children's and Youth Book Weeks are deliberately not organized as author readings in schools, but also not as an event culture in spectacular locations. Instead, school classes and groups of children should be introduced to the places of literature in their city, such as libraries, theaters and other cultural event venues.
At the Aachen Children's and Youth Book Weeks, almost without exception, the authors present their texts themselves. Events of the type “(local) celebrities read aloud” are not part of the Aachen concept. In some cases the Aachen Children's and Youth Book Weeks had a defined focus (2002 Dutch literature, 2009 Farewell, Death and Mourning). The organizers Alexandra Lünskens and Tina Terschmitten always try to select books for children and young people that are primarily literary.
history
From 1994 onwards, the Aachen Children's and Youth Book Weeks were organized by a working group of seven smaller Aachen bookshops , the working group Die Sieben . After business closings and the exit of some bookstores, the public library of the city of Aachen and its friends' association joined as co-organizers in 2004/2005 , only two bookstores remained connected to the project. In 2005, the organization was taken over privately by two of the most recently significantly involved booksellers and literary scholars, who founded the Children's and Youth Literature House Aachen eV as a legal form to organize the children's and youth book weeks in 2006 . Because of the great success of the children's and youth book weeks, the chairmen of the sponsoring association took on the conception of the literary event series " Aachen reads " for adults in a different function since 2008 , until this was left to the city administration's marketing department to save costs.
