The Außenems is a nature reserve in the district and community-free area of the outer Ems and in the Lower Saxony city ​​of Emden , the municipality of Krummhörn in the district of Aurich and the municipality of Bunde in the district of Leer .

The nature reserve with the sign NSG WE 314 is around 12,025  hectares . The largest part is in the district and community-free area of ​​the Ems, around 106 hectares are in the city of Emden and the districts of Aurich and Leer. The nature reserve includes the FFH and EU bird sanctuary "Hund und Paapsand" as well as parts of the FFH area "Unterems and Außenems" and the bird sanctuaries "Hund and Paapsand", "Krummhörn" and "Emsmarsch from Leer to Emden". In the northeast and southeast it borders on the Lower Saxony Wadden Sea National Park and in the southeast on the nature reserve " Unterems ". The area has been under nature protection since January 24, 2019. Responsible lower nature conservation authorities are the Lower Saxony State Agency for Water Management, Coastal and Nature Conservation and the districts of Leer and Aurich.

The reserve extends over a portion of the tidal embossed estuary of the EMS of the Geise at the mouth of the Ems in the Dollard over part of the Dollard to the Outer Ems at the level of Dukegats east of Eemshaven . It also includes areas that are claimed by both Germany and the Netherlands as national territory . The designation of the nature reserve was therefore carried out in coordination with the Netherlands, which also reported the parts of Außenems and Dollart they claimed as an FFH area ("Eems-Dollard").

In addition to the water and mud flats - in particular Hund and Paapsand, Knockster Watt and Geise - the area also includes Vordeich areas on the Rysumer Nacken and in the Knockster Bay. The nature reserve connects neighboring bird sanctuaries with one another. Furthermore it fulfills a connection function between the Ems, Dollart and the open Wadden Sea .

Flora and fauna

The forelands included in the nature reserve are occupied by salt marshes and reed beds . The nature reserve is a habitat and a. for oystercatchers , redshank , Bluethroat , Sedge Warbler and various grassland birds such as meadow pipit , which occur in the foothills areas, as well as important resting place and feeding habitat for various waders and waterfowl , including avocets , spoonbills , Curlew , Whimbrel , oystercatchers, redshank, Greenshank , godwit , bar-tailed godwit , golden plover , ringed plover , gray plover , Alpine beach runner , Ruddy Turnstone , gray goose , white-fronted goose , barnacle goose , brent goose , shelduck , eider duck , shoveler , wigeon , teal , pintail and red-breasted merganser . Furthermore, the seagulls black-headed gull , herring gull , common gull and black-headed gull as well as cormorant and common tern can be found as guest birds.

The Ems is the habitat of various fish species such as the large disc belly , flounder , beach and sand goby as well as a walking corridor for smelt , eel , feint and the round-mouthed river and sea ​​lamprey . It is also part of the habitat for seals and porpoises .

On dog and Paapsand settle large-scale mussel benches, and deposits of sea grass .
