Aurora is a city in Illinois . The 2010 census showed a population of 197,899; this makes Aurora the second largest city in Illinois after Chicago , just ahead of Rockford . About 110,000 of the residents live in Kane County , about 42,000 in DuPage County , while only a few thousand inhabit Will and Kendall Counties, respectively .
The city, which is part of the Chicago metropolitan area, also uses the nickname "City of Lights" because it was one of the first municipalities to switch entirely to electric street lighting (in 1881; the nickname only came into use in 1908). The meteorologist Tom Skilling , who over the Chicago Tribune and WGN-TV is known, from Aurora and a graduate of West Aurora High School . The characters of Wayne Campbell and Garth Algar ( portrayed by Mike Myers and Dana Carvey ), who first appeared on the television program Saturday Night Live , and then in two Wayne's World films, are also from Aurora; most of their adventures took place there too. (The films were not shot there, however.) The town is also mentioned in a song by the Alkaline Trio as the site of a car accident.
