Illnau-Effretikon (officially called Illnau until 1974 ) is a town and political municipality in the Pfäffikon district of the canton of Zurich in Switzerland .

Geographically, Illnau-Effretikon consists of the city of Effretikon, the villages of Illnau, Ottikon , Bisikon and Kyburg , as well as the hamlets of Agasul , Bietenholz, Billikon, First, Horben, Kemleten, Luckhausen , Mesikon and Oberkempttal.

A forest elevation above Brünggen is 689  m above sea level. M. the highest point in the municipality.

Since Kyburg was incorporated on January 1, 2016, Illnau-Effretikon is the fourth largest municipality in terms of area in the canton of Zurich after Zurich, Winterthur and Wädenswil.

The city ​​council , the city executive , had nine members until 2018. When it was downsized to 7 seats in 2018, the SVP lost all of its previous three seats. The mayor is Ueli Müller (SP, election on July 10, 2011).

In the 2019 National Council elections, the share of the vote in Illnau-Effretikon was: SVP 32.4%, SP 16.2%, FDP 12.4%, glp 12.3%, Greens 10.8%, CVP 4.1%, EPP 3 , 6%, BDP 3.2%, EDU 2.9%.

Illnau train station

The community is served by the Zurich – Winterthur railway, which opened on December 27, 1855, with the Effretikon station, and the Effretikon – Hinwil railway, which opened on May 3, 1876, with the Effretikon and Illnau stations.

The oldest surviving documentary mention dates from 745 for the settlements Illenavvia (Illnau), Erpfratinchova (Effretikon) and Makisinchova (Mesikon). Billikon was first mentioned in 858.

Finds from the Stone Age, as well as grave supplements from the Bronze and Iron Ages near Bisikon and Luckhausen indicate an early settlement. The finds from the early Middle Ages are more extensive here; Among them is the burial mound necropolis in Studenbrunnenholz below Ottikon, which was scientifically examined in 1928/29 and interpreted as the burial place of the grandparents of Beata Landolt (a noble landlady). Deeds from the 8th century to the monastery of St. Gallen indicate that Illnau-Effretikon was already largely developed by the Alemanni .

In the former hamlet of Moosburg , in the south of Effretikon, are the ruins of the Moosburg built by Count Hartmann IV von Kyburg in 1254 . It was the seat of the first Zurich bailiff of the Kyburg bailiff from 1426 to 1432 and was destroyed by the Central Swiss troops in May 1444 during the Old Zurich War.

With the construction of the station in 1855, the boom in Effretikon began and in 1974 it changed its name to the city ​​of Illnau-Effretikon .

In the second half of the 20th century, the Effretikon train station was rebuilt by the architect Max Vogt .

Incorporation of Kyburg

Kyburg

On November 24, 2013, 74.88 percent of Kyburg's eligible voters spoke out in favor of starting merger negotiations with Illnau-Effretikon. The government council of the canton of Zurich welcomed the plans to merge municipalities and promised a subsidy of 1.9 million francs (mainly to pay off part of Kyburg's debts). In the referendum on June 14, 2015, the merger was clearly accepted in Kyburg (81 percent yes-votes) and in Illnau-Effretikon (89 percent yes-votes). The merger was officially completed on January 1, 2016.
