action

season 1

On November 6, 1983, the boy Will Byers disappears in the fictional town of Hawkins in the US state of Indiana . While his desperate, single mother Joyce Byers turns to the local police, his three best friends Mike, Dustin and Lucas go to find him. In the forest they come across a distraught girl with short-cropped hair, on whose arm the numbers 011 are tattooed, which is why the three friends call her Elfi . Elfi has paranormal abilities that she uses in dangerous situations. However, these result in severe physical weakening. The girl pretends to have information about the boy's whereabouts and the three friends take it in with them.

A little later, Barbara, the best friend of Mike's older sister Nancy, disappears. Nancy teams up with Will's brother, Jonathan, to investigate what has happened.

During the course of the series, Elfi's background is explained in flashbacks. After her birth, the girl came under the control of a government-supported scientific research team, in which she was supposed to develop her mental abilities and learn psychic techniques, including telekinetic skills. Elfi's paranormal abilities result from scientific experiments on her mother, who is now unable to live and in need of care. The head of Hawkins National Laboratory , Martin Brenner, also pretends to be her father, in order to maintain their trust. In a parallel world, she came across a monster that kills every living being.

Those involved end up in a web of top-secret government experiments and supernatural events. The Hawkins National Laboratory ( Hawkins Labs for short ), an isolated research facility of the Department of Energy in a forest outside the city, plays an important role in this . Its leader Martin Brenner tries to get Elfi back into his hands with the help of armed units.

With the police officer Jim Hopper, the mother of the missing boy is looking for access to the parallel dimension in which her son is supposed to be still alive. She can enter the dimension together with Hopper and free Will. For Nancy's friend Barbara, any help comes too late.

During a fight in the local school, Elfi defeats the monster using her paranormal powers, but then disappears into another dimension with the monster due to this great effort. At the end of the season, policeman Jim Hopper brings waffles, Elfi's favorite food, to a chest in the woods to give her. Your further existence in another dimension can therefore be assumed. Finally, a connection between Will and the parallel dimension is revealed: When he washes his hands in the bathroom on Christmas Eve, he coughs and spits a worm-like creature into the sink. For a short moment he is then in the parallel world.

season 2

On October 28, 1984, a girl and other teenagers escaped from a crime scene. She uses psychic powers to collide the chasing patrol cars through the illusion of a collapsing tunnel. Her nose starts to bleed and a tattoo with the number 008 can be seen on her wrist.

Preparations for Halloween are in full swing in Hawkins when Hopper is informed of strange incidents in pumpkin fields. At school, the new classmate from California causes excitement in the nerd clique: Maxine (short: Max) is new to the school and has already broken Dustin's records in the game Dig Dug under the name Mad Max in the arcade .

Meanwhile, Will is struggling with problems of a completely different kind: He is haunted again and again by strange seizures in which he sees the dark side and is pursued by a huge shadow monster that resembles an oversized spider. Dr. Owens, who looks after Will, doesn't take the boy's condition seriously. He suspects that because of his time in the other world, Will has post- traumatic stress disorder that gets worse the closer the anniversary of his disappearance from Hawkins approaches.

In the meantime, Mike is still dealing with the loss of Elfi, whom he believes is dead. In truth, Elfi managed to escape from the other dimension and was found by Hopper after a long stay in the woods around Hawkins. Elfi has been hiding this in his grandfather's old hunting lodge for a year now. He keeps her return a secret and forbids her to leave the hut, let alone see Mike, over which the two get into a heated argument and Hopper gives her house arrest.

Nancy still feels guilty about Barbara's death, which also breaks her relationship with Steve. Barb's parents continue to believe their daughter is alive and have now gone deep into debt and even sold their house to hire a private investigator. Nancy Wheeler and Jonathan Byers ultimately confide in this with secret tape recordings from the laboratory, which confirm that the experiments in the laboratory are related to Barb's death.

Will's condition is worsening. Of his friends, only Mike seems to have an open ear for him, while Lucas and Dustin are busy trying to win Max's favor. Dustin hopes to impress her with his new, unusual pet. He found a kind of reptile in his garbage can, which he baptized with the name D'Artagnan - dart for short. Dart sheds its skin again and again, grows frighteningly fast and turns out to be a monster from the other side.

When it escapes the kids at school and the kids go looking for him, Will remembers that he vomited a slimy thing into the sink after his return from the other world. He seems to assume that darts came from the other world.

Joyce Byers doesn't let Will's condition rest. She watches the video Will shot with a camera on Halloween evening before he had another vision of the other world. On the tape she discovers the image of a huge spider.

When Will the shadow monster reappears at school, he no longer runs away, but instead confronts the monster, which then plunges into his body. Joyce and the others find Will.

Joyce Byers brings Will home so he can recover from the seizure. You'll let him a bath because his body temperature is quite low, but he refuses to take it on the grounds that it is like to have cold.

Later, Will reports to Joyce and Hopper, whom she asked for help, that he is linked to the Shadow Monster. To make it understandable to them, Will makes a lot of sketches and Joyce and Hopper put them together to make a card.

Hopper makes another terrifying discovery under the pumpkin fields: the other side has spread from the laboratory in an underground system of tunnels under the Hawkins floor. Hopper is trapped in the tunnel system and caught by the shadow monster. With the help of Bob, Joyce's new significant other, Hopper can be located and freed in good time.

Will's seizures keep getting worse; together with Mike he finds out that he is connected to the other side and can access their memories, which he calls now memories. Will thus acts as a kind of spy who uses his knowledge to help Hawkins take action against the monster. In the process, Will loses more and more of his own personality and memory, which leads to the point that Will no longer even recognizes Bob or Hopper.

In the end, Will not only uses his connection to the monster, but also the other way around: At the monster's command, Will sends a group of soldiers into a trap in the tunnel system, where they are killed by a group of monsters. Joyce knows that she has to cut the connection between her son and the monster in order to save Will, but no one knows how to do that.

Meanwhile, Elfi has taken advantage of Hopper's absence to disappear from Hawkins and find her mother. With her skills, she manages to connect with her apathetic mother. In this way Elfi learns of the existence of another girl who is like her: Kali, alias Eight. She lives with a group of criminal outsiders in an industrial area of Chicago and has vowed to track down former employees of the Hawkins Laboratory and punish them for their actions. Similar to Elfi, Kali has special abilities. It can influence people's perception and conjure up illusions. The outsider clique uses Elfi's telepathic skills to find her next victim. Just as Elfi is about to take revenge on him for destroying her mother's mind with electric shocks, she learns that he is a family man and has two young daughters. Elfi can't bring herself to kill the man and disappears while escaping the police to return to Hawkins, feeling that her friends are in danger and need their help.

The monster from the other side is gaining power and more and more demo dogs - this is what Dustin calls the smaller demogorgons, which also includes darts - spread in Hawkins and attack the laboratory, which still has the gate to the other side. Hopper, Will, Joyce, Mike, Bob and Dr. Owens are trapped in the laboratory with the demo dogs after the building was completely cordoned off by an activated alarm. Bob, who knows computers, agrees to unlock the lock so Joyce and the others can escape. Bob's plan is successful, but the demo dogs kill him while trying to escape.

When the group arrives back at the Byers house, they try to establish contact with Will, who is controlled by the shadow monster. Hopper notices that Will unobtrusively sends them a message via Morse code asking them to close the gate in the laboratory.

When the Byers phone rings, the shadow monster in Will recognizes where he is and calls the demo dogs over. The group prepares for a battle, but when the dogs reach the house, Elfi suddenly appears and uses her skills to kill the dogs.

Steve takes care of Dustin, Lucas, Mike and Max, who stay behind at the Byers house and develop a plan to keep the demo dogs away from the lab by distracting them with a fire in the tunnel. Joyce, Jonathan and Nancy have retired with Will in Hopper's secret hut to expose the boy to enormous heat and thus to chase the cold-loving shadow monster out of his body - with success.

Hopper and Elfi manage to close the gate on the other side - thanks to Steve and the rest of the kids' diversion. Hawkins is safe again.

One month later, the Hawkins laboratory had to be closed for good after Nancy, Jonathan and the private investigator sent tape recordings to various newspapers in the country and revealed the trimmed-down scandal that toxic toxins had leaked out of the laboratory. It is portrayed as if Barb died from these toxins. Her parents can finally stop the pointless search and bury their daughter.

Dr. Owens surprises Hopper with a birth certificate that Elfi - henceforth Jane Hopper - is supposed to enable a normal life as his alleged biological daughter. Although Owens advises him to keep Jane hidden for another year until everything has calmed down, Hopper allows her to go to the annual winter ball, where she dances with Mike and the two kiss.

The final scene shows that the shadow monster is still alive, keeping an eye on the school where the winter ball takes place on the other side.

season 3

In June 1984, Soviet scientists tried to open a gate on the other side . When they succeed for a few seconds, it closes again. The commander in chief of the scientists gives them 1 year to open the gate again permanently.

Dustin returns to Hawkins after a month at summer camp, but all of his friends except Will and Steve now have relationships and therefore little time for him. But Dustin also met a girl in camp: Suzie. Since she doesn't live near him, he wants to talk to her using a self-made, particularly powerful walkie-talkie receiver. However, he fails to establish a connection with her, which raises doubts about Suzie's existence. Instead, Dustin receives a Russian message. Hopper, meanwhile, has a hard time accepting Elfi's relationship with Mike, and has a serious word with the boy. Joyce wonders why the magnets in her house are no longer working, and Billy is attacked by an unknown being.

Mike lied to Elfi, which is why she breaks up with him on Max's advice. The two friends spend a day together in the newly opened Starcourt Mall, where Steve works and sells ice cream. Dustin shares his discoveries with him, and together they want to uncover a Russian conspiracy. Nancy and Jonathan are interns at the Hawkins Newspaper, and Nancy follows the story of an old woman on her own whose manure appears to have been eaten by rats. Billy (Max's older brother) has been infected by Mindflayer and is given the task of making more sacrifices to him.

Joyce and Hopper investigate the strange events in Hawkins. Elfi accidentally notices that something seems to be wrong with Billy and goes to look for him and the missing lifeguard Heather together with Max. Will is annoyed that his friends are only talking about their relationships and forces Mike and Lucas to play a game of Dungeons & Dragons. Dustin and Steve realize that the Russians' appearance at Hawkins is related to the Starcourt Mall. Meanwhile, Billy and Heather kidnap Heather's parents to Mindflayer.

Dustin, Steve and his colleague Robin know that the Russians are hiding something in a secret warehouse in the Starcourt Mall. But since they cannot fit through the ventilation shaft to investigate, they ask Lucas' sister Erica for help. Will senses that Mindflayer is back, and Elfi and Max immediately suspect that his return has something to do with Billy's behavior. They test it by locking him in a sauna. And indeed: He can't stand the heat, just like the Mindflayer before. Billy manages to escape, and in the meantime he has already put together a small army of Mindflayer zombies.

Joyce and Hopper kidnap one of the Russian scientists, Alexej, who secretly work in Hawkins. They take him to Hopper's confidante Murray, who speaks Russian and translates for them. After initial difficulties, a kind of trusting relationship can be built up - only Hopper is still skeptical of Alexej.

Steve, Dustin, Robin and Erica arrive in the Russians' storage room, which turns out to be an elevator and takes them deep underground, where the Russians carry out their experiments. Nancy and Jonathan visit the old lady who is doing her rat research in the hospital, but something seems to be wrong with her and they are soon attacked by Mindflayer zombies - Nancy and Jonathan's former boss and another employee. Once defeated, they turn into bloody goo and mutate into a bigger monster.

When Robin and Steve are caught, Dustin and Erica must come up with a plan to save them. Mike isn't thrilled that Elfi has to risk her life again. She plunges into Billy's mind and sees how his abusive father has gradually spoiled him. Mindflayer-Billy then holds her in his mind and threatens to kill her and all of her friends. The Mindflayer knows that only Elfi can stop him. In the meantime, all Mindflayer zombies form a giant monster that is approaching the Independence Day fair.

Dustin and Erica can free Steve and Robin from the secret facility of the Russians. The Mindflayer monster does not go to the fair, but to Hopper's hut because it knows where they are through Elfi's contact with Billy. Elfi can fend off the monster for the time being, but is bitten. They want to treat them in a supermarket in the mall, but the Russians are soon looking for them there, and the monster is on its way to them again.

In the meantime, Hopper, Joyce, Murray and Alexej also arrive at the fair. Hopper and Joyce go in search of the children. Before that, Hopper instructs Murray and Alexej to stay in the car, which they ignore in order to have fun. The corrupt mayor Kline manages to inform the Russians, who are still on the hunt for Hopper and Joyce, unnoticed. Here Alexej, a traitor to his compatriots, is murdered. Hopper, Joyce and Murray manage to escape.

Everyone now comes together in the mall, including Hopper, Joyce, Nancy and Jonathan, to stop the Russians and defeat the monster. The Mindflayer monster can only act because the Russians keep a portal to the shadow world open. Joyce, Hopper and Murray want to paralyze the system and render the monster harmless. Meanwhile there is fighting up in the mall, but Elfi seems to have lost her strength. Billy attacks Elfi, but Elfi can soothe him with memories of his mother and his happy childhood, whereupon he stands in the way of the monster. Hopper and Joyce manage to get through to the system with the help of Dustin's friend Suzie, but there Hopper is attacked by a Russian. He decides the fight for himself, but is then in an area that he can no longer leave if Joyce is to shut down the system. She does and Hopper is gone. Three months later, Hopper was pronounced dead and Elfi moved in with Joyce, Will and Jonathan. The Byers are moving away from Hawkins, however, as Joyce thinks the town is too dangerous. So many of the friends have to say goodbye.

Meanwhile, they learn that the Russians are holding an American prisoner in Russia. You can also see a prisoner being eaten by a demogorgon.

reception

The series was generally positively to very positively received. On the Rotten Tomatoes website , which collects reviews , the series achieved an average of 94%, and on the Metacritic site it achieved a score of 76. The point of criticism was usually that Stranger Things did not offer much new, well as a homage, but not as an independent one Series would be there.

Most of the time, the professional reviews were good to euphoric. The acting performance of Winona Ryder in particular has received numerous praise. The setting and the soundtrack are described as very authentic and atmospheric, the acting performances of the children are often positively highlighted. Carolin Ströbe wrote in Die Zeit : “The new Netflix series Stranger Things alternates between mystery films, teen slasher and high school drama and is a treasure trove for 1980s film fans. You can't even list the references: ET , Stand by Me , The Goonies , Carrie , Alien , Poltergeist , The Blob and of course Nightmare on Elm Street .
