The CONCACAF Champions League 2018 was the 10th season of the most important competition for club teams in North and Central America and the Caribbean in football under this name. The tournament began on February 20, 2018 with the round of 16 and ended with the finals in April 2018. The defending champion was the Mexican club CF Pachuca , but they did not qualify.
The Mexican club Deportivo Guadalajara won the competition for the second time after 1962 with a 4-2 win on penalties against Toronto FC and qualified as CONCACAF representative for the 2018 FIFA Club World Cup in the United Arab Emirates .
Toronto FC's Jonathan Osorio was the top scorer with four goals. The Italian Sebastian Giovinco was named the best player in the competition .
mode
16 teams from 8 nations took part in the CONCACAF Champions League 2018. Unlike in previous years, when the game was initially played in a group stage, the competition was only held in the knockout system . Starting from the round of 16 up to and including the final, each round was played with a return leg . If there was a tie after both games, the away goals rule was applied and therefore no winner could be determined, there was a penalty shoot-out .
Field of participants
On October 28, 2016, FIFA suspended the Guatemalan Football Association because of political interference by the government. As a result, all clubs from Guatemala were excluded from participating in international competitions. The CONCACAF then awarded the vacated space to the association from Costa Rica. The following 16 teams had qualified for the CONCACAF Champions League 2018.
