Casanova is an American romantic comedy directed by Swedish director Lasse Hallström from 2005 . The film is loosely based on the life of Giacomo Casanova , portrayed by Heath Ledger .

action

The film is set in the Republic of Venice in 1753 . Giacomo Casanova , the heartbreaker of the city, spends most of his life in the beds of beautiful women and more than lives up to his reputation as a passionate seduction artist.

But the Inquisition disagrees with Casanova's dissolute life, from which even the nuns are not safe. One day the Doge gives him a difficult ultimatum : either Casanova will marry before the carnival is over, or he will be banished from the city forever. Reluctantly, Casanova starts looking for a suitable bride, because he does not want to leave Venice in the hope of one day seeing his mother again in Venice, and finally decides on the beautiful Victoria, who is known throughout Venice for her virginity .

But shortly afterwards Casanova falls head over heels in love with Francesca Bruni, an emancipated scientist who thinks nothing of a man who spends every night in a different bed and who instead fights for true love. In addition, Francesca has already been promised to another man, while her clumsy brother Giovanni is madly in love with Casanova's fiancée Victoria. Casanova leaves no stone unturned to win Francesca's heart, but the Inquisition, above all Bishop Pucci, is already hot on his heels. When Casanova is finally heard from Francesca, it seems to be too late for them. But they didn't count on Giacomo's mother, who promised to return to Venice one day, and so the story ends well when Casanova escapes with Francesca and Giovanni marries Victoria, but takes Casanova's place in Venice .

criticism

“The colorful, musically lively picture sheet largely distances itself from the historical person and paints the image of a libertine and notorious seducer. Set in front of a splendid Rococo backdrop, staging committed to the Commedia dell'arte, the entertaining film delivers characters rather than in-depth characters. "

The Rotten Tomatoes website evaluated 131 reviews and came up with a positive rating of 44%.
