The Copa MX 1990/91 was the 37th edition of the football - cup competition since the introduction of professional football in Mexico . The 20 teams that were represented in the top division in the 1990/91 season were eligible to participate . Cup winners for the first and so far only time was the team of the Leones Negros from the Universidad de Guadalajara .

The preliminary round was held in group encounters. There were four groups, each consisting of five teams. The teams within the same group met twice each. The four group winners qualified for the semi-finals, which, like the final, were decided in a knockout process with a return match each.
