Rach, the restaurant tester with Christian Rach, was a documentary soap on the TV station RTL that was broadcast from 2005 to 2013 and 2017. In 2014 and 2015 it was broadcast under the name Der Restauranttester with Steffen Henssler . The show is an adaptation of the English format Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares .
action
The concept of the program largely follows that of the British model: the protagonist, a successful cook, visits a restaurant that has problems per episode. His job is to save the place. To do this, he checks the kitchen, service and management and then confronts the operator with his mostly drastic analysis. Depending on the individual case, strategies are then proposed or jointly developed in order to improve the previous concept or replace it with a new one. The usual time frame is a week, which sometimes lasts seven days, sometimes ends on the 5th day, but in some cases is stretched to several months due to fundamental renovation work. After a few weeks, the restaurant is visited again to check the sustainability and success of the measures taken. In addition, some establishments will be revisited in later seasons after a significantly longer period.
Rach, the restaurant tester
The pilot episode aired on September 11, 2005, and the series began regularly in late 2006. With the beginning of the third season in autumn 2008, the program was moved from the original Sunday evening slot to Monday evening and has been broadcast in widescreen 16: 9 since then. By 2012, 27 of the 50 restaurants visited had been saved. After Rachs switched to ZDF , the show was continued under the new title Der Restauranttester on February 24, 2014 with Steffen Henssler . In 2017 the series was continued with Christian Rach, with five more episodes being created. No further new episodes are currently planned.
So far, unlike in the British "mother series", there have been no specific allegations about incidents staged without the knowledge of the restaurants concerned. However, in accordance with the character of the genre and the dramaturgy, scenes are deliberately selected and contexts are sometimes left out. According to information from individual hosts, alleged difficulties in individual cases were constructed or exaggerated, for example in the case of a hotel in Baden-Württemberg.

criticism
In 2016, the newspaper Bild criticized the ultimately low success rate. Rach replied that he had always pointed out the risks. Several hosts of the restaurants shown criticized the behavior of Rach and RTL in retrospect, for example that instead of the restaurant, private issues such as marriage problems were brought into focus or that Rach criticized portions that were too small, even though they were especially for him to try were served. Another restaurant operator published an open letter to Mr Rach on his website in which he criticized the one-sided negative portrayal of himself and his wife in the program.
