action
Skipper, Kowalski, Rico and Private enter Fort Knox . In the lounge for the staff, the cheese flips that are no longer for sale to the public are offered in the snack machine and the other penguins want to give private some of them in honor of his birthday.
In the endeavor, however, they are met by the dangerous villain Dr. Octavius Brine captured. In his hiding place, they discover that he is actually an octopus in disguise named Dave. He tells them that he once lived in the Central Park Zoo but quickly lost the audience's sympathy after the four penguins got there. So he changed several zoos, where the same thing always happened. He bitterly declared war on the penguins for this.
However, the four penguins manage to free themselves and use the canister to flee from the submarine they were in. This leads to a chase with Dave's henchmen through the lagoon city of Venice. When they come to a dead end, they are suddenly rescued by a technical rescue team consisting of a husky, a polar bear, a baby seal and a snowy owl that Kowalski takes a liking to. The penguins are brought by plane to the North Pole, where this group has its secret base.
The husky says that they are the secret organization North Wind , which helps all weak animals in the world. At first they are impressed when Skipper presents them with the canister. Suddenly they are called by Dave, who still has a whole tank of them. To get the penguins to safety, they are stunned and put on an airplane.
But you can get out of it and decide to fight Dave on your own. During an attempt in Shanghai, however, Private is also captured, whereupon Skipper decides to leave the matter to Nordwind . However, they are also captured and shortly afterwards the remaining three penguins. Dave now opens up his plan to them: with his "Medusa Serum" he wants to transform the cuddly penguins into deformed mutants so that they also know how one feels to be rejected. First he wants to try the remedy on private. He can escape with the help of a hidden paper clip, but the others think he died trying.
Private manages to save the agents from North Wind , but cannot prevent Dave from using his machine to transform the penguins and thus bring them to the port of Manhattan. With the machine, Private can also transform the penguins back again. Dave shrinks and finds himself inside a snow globe. Nordwind now pays tribute to the penguins, who shortly afterwards set off for home with a new rocket backpack .

reception
At Rotten Tomatoes , 73% of the reviews are positive, out of a total of 88 reviews. In conclusion, it says: “ The penguins from Madagascar are fast and colorful enough to entertain small children, but too silly to be fun for the whole family.” The industry journal Variety described the film as “a weak attempt at a cute and cuddly international one Intrigue". The penguins from Madagascar are "less irresistible overall" in their first own feature film.
The film-dienst criticized that in the film "implied questions about growing up, acceptance and a sense of community" were largely lost. The story “slips completely into the absurd and fantastic” and in the “mass of cinematic references and pop cultural allusions the characters' charm is lost”.
David Siems from epd Film awarded 4 out of 5 stars. He comes to the conclusion that “this Dreamworks film is solid to extremely entertaining action cinema”, that “breathes fresh air into the often leisurely genre with fine irony and plenty of winking” and is also an experience for adults thanks to the “numerous pop culture references”.
The German Film and Media Assessment (FBW) awarded the film the rating “valuable”.
