He made his debut on the ATP World Tour at the Winston-Salem Open in the same year when he lost in two sets as a lucky loser in the first round against Horacio Zeballos , who was then number 58 in the world rankings. His first win at this level he celebrated a year later in the same place , when he again won as Lucky Loser against Tennys Sandgren in straight sets, but then eliminated in the round of 16.

In June 2019 he celebrated his greatest success so far when he won the Ilkley Challenger tournament in the final against Dennis Novak in three sets. At the US Open 2019 Koepfer was able to play his way into the main field via qualification and surprisingly reached the round of 16 after victories against Jaume Munar , Reilly Opelka and Nikolos Bassilaschwili , which he lost to the eventual finalist Daniil Medvedev after four sets.
