geography

The municipality of Erching is located in Bitscher Land on the border with Saarland , about halfway between Saargemünd and Bitche .

The Guiderkirch district is located in the Bickenalb valley . The main town of Erching is a little northwest at the end of a side valley.

history

Erching before the destruction of the Second World War

Five Gallo-Roman buildings were found in the area.

Erching is mentioned for the first time in 1150, Guiderkirch ( German Güderkirchen) in 1315 as Rudelkirchen . From 1790 to 2014 the villages belonged to the canton of Volmunster , which no longer exists , and since then to the canton of Bitche.

In the years 1944 and 1945, especially in the last weeks of the Second World War , Erching was the scene of the heaviest acts of war. From November 1944 to March 1945 the main battle line ran right through Erching and Guiderkirch. On February 23, 1945, an attack by the US Air Force led to its complete destruction. A third of the village population at that time was killed in the attacks. The diary of Anne Scheyer from Erchingen provides a moving account of this time.
