European Cup Winners' Cup 1989/90

The 1990/91 European Cup Winners 'Cup was the 31st draw in the European Football Cup Winners' Cup. 33 club teams from 32 countries took part, including defending champion Sampdoria Genoa , 27 national cup winners and 5 defeated cup finalists (Flamurtari Vlora, Neuchâtel Xamax, PSV Schwerin, Steaua Bucharest and Trabzonspor). Manchester United became the first English club to win the title straight away after being suspended for five years due to the Heysel disaster . Yugoslavia did not send a representative due to the armed conflict that was looming .

From Germany were DFB Cup winners 1. FC Kaiserslautern , for the DFV FDGB Cup finalist and GDR league representative PSV Schwerin (Cup winner Dynamo Dresden was qualified for the European Cup of National Champions as champion of the last GDR Oberliga season ), from Austria ÖFB cup winners FK Austria Wien and from Switzerland cup finalist Neuchâtel Xamax at the start.

In the final at the Feyenoord Stadium in Rotterdam, Manchester United defeated FC Barcelona 2-1.

The top scorer was the Italian Roberto Baggio from Juventus Turin with 9 goals.

mode

As usual, the participants played the winner in pure cup mode with home and return matches. If there was a tie after both games, the number of goals scored away decided ( away goal rule ). If their number was also the same, extra time took place in the second leg, in which the away goals rule also applied. If there was still a tie at the end of extra time, a penalty shoot- out was carried out. The final was decided in a game on a neutral court. In the event of a tie after extra time, the winner would also have been determined in a penalty shoot-out.
