Franz Xaver (first name)
Franz Xaver , also Franz-Xaver , [ fʁants ˈksɑfɐ ] is a male given name .
Origin, meaning and distribution
The name follows the Romanic custom of using saints' second names, even if it is a surname or surname, as the first name, the double name is inextricably linked with this saint. This name goes back to Saint Francisco de Xavier y Jassu , whose missionary work in India and Japan made a great impression on the Catholic population in earlier times. The Jesuit's letters from the mission were distributed in print.
Franz comes from Old High German in the meaning free, bold , but is primarily the guiding name of Franz von Assisi ; Xavier refers to the Xavier castle (from the Basque expression etxe berri 'new house'), the birthplace of the saint.
After the Counter-Reformation of the 16th century, the Germanization was mainly anchored in the Bavarian language area ( Bavaria and Austria ) and is abbreviated as FX , an abbreviation Franz X. is also possible, but “Xaver” is not omitted. The nickname is almost exclusively "Xaver" (or the full Franz-Xaver). (In America , where the Christian reference is less dominant, there are deviations from this.)
