The final round of the 1970 FIFA World Cup ( . Span Campeonato Mundial de Futbol ) was the ninth playout of the most important tournament for football - national teams and was held from 31 May to 21 June 1970 in Mexico instead. It was the second major sporting event in Mexico after the 1968 Olympic Games .

For the first time at a soccer World Cup, two former world champions faced each other in the final. Since both were world champions twice, it was already clear before the final that the Coupe Jules Rimet would be awarded for the last time. Brazil defeated Italy, became the first team to become world champions for the third time and were allowed to keep the trophy. During the victory celebrations in Brazil on June 21st, 44 people died in Rio de Janeiro alone.

Defending champion England failed in the quarter-finals against Germany, which returned the favor for the lost final four years earlier and ended up in third place. Host Mexico also failed in the quarter-finals against eventual finalists Italy. The top scorer was Gerd Müller with 10 goals.

For the first time football matches from Latin America were shown live on European television and for the first time the World Cup matches were broadcast in color. So that the European viewers could see the games at 7 p.m. CET, many games, e.g. B. the quarter-final game Germany-England and the final, kicked off at 12 noon local time.

The 1970 World Cup is considered by many athletes and journalists to be one of the best tournaments, because at that time many players, who are still legendary today, were at their peak and brought the game to a higher level.

Award

The final round of the World Cup was awarded at the FIFA Congress in Tokyo on October 8, 1964. Mexico prevailed against their competitors Argentina with 56:32 votes.

Advance ticket sales began on July 10, 1969, with the cheapest seat costing around 1.43 DM and the most expensive subscription around 285.50 DM (10 Schilling / 2,000 Schilling).

qualification

Main article: Qualifying for the 1970 World Cup

For the first time, a place was guaranteed for Africa and Asia. Morocco and Israel qualified. The biggest surprise in the European groups was the third place in the World Cup in 1966, Portugal, which, despite the use of superstar Eusébio , was only last in Group 1 behind Romania, Greece and Switzerland. Also astonishing was the failure of Spain and Yugoslavia, which had to give way to the football dwarf Belgium in Group 6. In Group 8, Bulgaria prevailed against Poland and the Netherlands, both of which would play a leading role at the World Cup in Germany four years later.

The Federal Republic had little trouble securing group victory against Scotland, Austria and Cyprus. The 12-0 win against Cyprus was the biggest win in all of World Cup qualification. The GDR had to just surrender to Italy.

In the South American groups, Peru surprisingly came out on top against fellow favorites Argentina. El Salvador's victory over Honduras in the Group 13 playoff sparked a football war between the two countries that killed over 2,000 people. El Salvador took part in a World Cup for the first time. Brazil finished the qualification with 12-0 points.

Before the actual draw, it was determined by lot whether Romania or Sweden would be allocated to pot 4 with the so-called little ones. Host Mexico was placed in group 1 in advance, the world champion England in group 3. Each group was drawn one team from each pot without any further restrictions. So it was possible for the only two CONCACAF teams Mexico and El Salvador to end up in one group. Since Brazil was assigned to Pot 2 and not Pot 1, the last two world champions Brazil and England met in Group 3.

On the one hand, this World Cup was characterized by changes and innovations in football. One of the changes was that, for the first time, substitutions (two players per team per game) were allowed as FIFA was concerned about the stress on players in extreme heat and high altitude. The yellow and red cards also premiered at a World Cup tournament . The red card was not used. The Telstar was the first soccer ball specially developed for a soccer world championship.

The 16 teams played in four groups of four. In the event of a tie, the goal difference decided, if the goal difference was the same, the lot decided. The group winners and runners-up made it to the quarter-finals. From then on, the knockout system continued. There was no penalty shoot-out in the knockout rounds. If it had been a draw after extra time, a lot would have been drawn. The final would have been repeated in a draw after extra time. If the replay had also ended in a draw after extra time, the new world champion would have been determined by drawing lots .

Seldom has a home advantage been as crucial as at this World Cup. At temperatures of well over 30 degrees Celsius and at an extremely high altitude, hosts Mexico, cheered on by over 110,000 fanatical spectators, was able to reach the next round at a World Cup for the first time. In the final and decisive game, Belgium was narrowly beaten. By drawing lots, the Soviet Union won the group ahead of the Mexicans with the same number of points. The rule that the number of goals scored is decisive for the same goal difference did not apply until the 1974 World Cup. World Cup newcomer El Salvador was the only team in the tournament to remain without a goal.

A single goal scored after 11 minutes in their first game against Sweden was enough for the minimalists from Italy to advance to the quarter-finals as group winners. In the second game against Uruguay, the reigning European champions switched to a tired defensive game and then did not get past the 0-0 against the newcomer to the World Cup, Israel.

In the decisive game for second place in the group, Sweden only managed to score the winning goal against Uruguay in stoppage time. Due to the goal difference, the Scandinavians would have needed a 2-0, and so the South Americans made it to the quarter-finals.

The biggest surprise of the preliminary round was the pathetic elimination of the 1962 vice world champion, the ČSSR. With 0: 6 points and 2: 7 goals they became the worst team of the tournament after the newcomer El Salvador. Brazil safely became group winners ahead of England.

In the game between England and Brazil, Gordon Banks managed one of the greatest saving acts of his career. A cross from Jairzinho headed Pelé flat and seemingly untenable for Banks in the left, long corner. Banks, who was still on the way to the other corner during the header, jumped spectacularly backwards into the far corner and fended off the ball with his right hand.

Vice world champions Germany came in the first game against the blatant outsider Morocco to a difficult 2-1 win. After a serious mistake by Horst-Dieter Höttges , the North Africans took the lead in the 20th minute, which lasted into the second half. Germany also fell behind in the second game. The ultimately clear 5-2 victory over Bulgaria in front of only 6000 spectators was thanks to an outstanding Reinhard Libuda , who scored the equalizer, took a penalty and set up two more goals. Only in the last game against the strong Peruvians could the DFB selection convince. Gerd Müller scored three goals in two consecutive games (Bulgaria and Peru) and even managed a "flawless" hat trick against Peru .

Brazil and Italy had little trouble with their opponents Peru and Mexico respectively and came to safe victories. The game between the Soviet Union and Uruguay was 0-0 until shortly before the end of the second extra time, before Esparrago shot the South Americans to victory. The England – Germany game turned out to be one of the most dramatic of the entire tournament. England led 2-0 until the 67th minute, before Franz Beckenbauer scored the next goal with a dedicated solo run. In the 82nd minute, Uwe Seeler equalized with the back of his head, after which the game went into overtime. The decisive goal against the physically relieving Englishmen was scored in the 108th minute by striker Gerd Müller after a cross from Hennes Löhr . The 1966 world champion was eliminated. Until June 30, 2014, it was the only World Cup game that Germany could win without a penalty shoot-out in overtime. Until the semi-finals between Italy and Germany on June 17, 1970, the match between Germany and England was considered the "game of the century".

For the first time only ex-world champions were in the semi-finals at this world championship. Since Brazil, Italy and Uruguay had already won the title twice, only Germany's entry into the final could have prevented the fact that it was already decided after the semi-finals that the cup would be won by an association for the third time and thus retained according to the regulations in force at the time could be. Mexico City was originally set to host the first semi-final and Guadalajara for the second. When the pairings were established, FIFA switched venues. Uruguay only entered under protest, as it was suspected that the game had been moved to Guadalajara because the Brazilians had played their previous games there. The second semi-final between Italy and Germany went down in history as the game of the century . The Italians took the lead on seven minutes and it looked like Italy could save that lead over time. It was not until stoppage time that Karl-Heinz Schnellinger , who played in Italy, scored the equalizer with his only international goal. Gerd Müller took the lead for Germany in extra time, but the Italians equalized after a mistake by Held before Luigi Riva restored the Italian lead. In the second half of extra time, Müller managed to equalize again, but Gianni Rivera scored the 4: 3 final one minute later. Today a commemorative plaque at the Aztec Stadium refers to this game.

It was the first final in which two former world champions met. Since both had already won the trophy twice, the winner could finally take possession of the trophy . In the final, Brazil took the lead thanks to a goal from Pelé. After a few serious defensive mistakes by the Brazilians, Roberto Boninsegna equalized. In the second half, the exhaustion of the Italians after the game of the century made itself felt. They couldn't do much to counter the creativity of the Brazilians. Gerson shot the ball powerfully and untenable to make it 2-1. Gerson and Pelé then also prepared the 3-1 through Jairzinho. Brazil's fourth goal by Alberto Carlos again played Pelé.

Honors of the placed

The German national team was voted Team of the Year in Germany , Uwe Seeler was voted Footballer of the Year and Gerd Müller was voted Europe's Footballer of the Year ( Luigi Riva came third here). In 1970 there was no such award in Brazil or Italy.
