List of drawing lots in football

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The following list shows the drawing of lots in important football matches and tournaments. In the summer of 1970 , drawing lots was replaced by a penalty shoot-out in individual games . The drawing of lots only came into play if teams showed equality of points and goals in a table and the direct comparison could not be used. Further criteria were added later, such as the results of previous qualifications or the fair play rating. At the U-17 World Cup in 2009, Brazil and the Netherlands were eliminated as fifth and sixth-best group third due to the poorer fair play rating compared to the United Arab Emirates with otherwise the same number of points, goal difference and goals.

The drawing of lots was relatively rare compared to the penalty shootout. The reason for this is that the decision-making and replay games were mostly abolished at the same time, so that there is now a penalty shoot-out immediately after extra time without a decision. This only applies to a limited extent to cup competitions with a return leg, as the away goals rule was introduced here .

Competitions for national teams

World Championship

  • 1954 : In qualifying for the 1954 World Cup , Spain and Turkey met and won their home games. After a play-off in Rome , which ended 2-2 afterwards, the Turkish team was named the winner by drawing lots. At the tournament in Switzerland , Yugoslavia won Group 1 by drawing lots before Brazil , after both teams had separated 1: 1 afterwards. Austria won group 3 by drawing lots before Uruguay , both had not played against each other, but met in the game for third place, which Austria won 3-1.

The rule that with the same goal difference, the more goals scored decide on the placement, only applied from the 1974 World Cup.

  • 2013 : At the European Women's Football Championship , a quarter-final place was given to Denmark by drawing of lots. In the tournament there were three groups of four teams each, with the first two teams and the two best third-placed teams going straight to the quarter-finals. In the original regulations, placements in the groups were precisely regulated, but the procedure for determining the best third-placed winners was not. On 20./21. In March 2012, UEFA decided, as an annex to the regulations, that only the points are counted and that, in the event of a tie, a drawing of lots should be carried out. Since Denmark and Russia were the worst third placed with 2 points, a drawing had to be made between these two. If the goal difference or the UEFA coefficient for women's national teams had been used as criteria, as was the case with group placements, Denmark would also have made it to the quarter-finals.

Copa America
