This article covers the Peruvian national soccer team at the 2018 World Cup . Peru was the last team to qualify through the intercontinental playoffs against New Zealand. The team took part for the fifth time and of the former qualified World Cup participants is the one who has not been there the longest. Most recently, Peru qualified for the 1982 World Cup.

qualification

The team ultimately qualified via the intercontinental playoffs after the team had finished fifth in the qualification of the South American football association CONMEBOL .

Games

The Peruvians have been trained by the Argentine Ricardo Gareca since March 2015 . As a player, with his goal to make it 2-2 in the final group match of the qualification between Argentina and Peru, this ensured that Peru missed the direct qualification for the 1986 World Cup.

Peru had to qualify in the qualification against the other nine South American CONMEBOL members in an everyone against everyone round with home and away games. The first four teams could qualify directly and the fifth best team via the intercontinental playoffs against the winner of the Oceania qualification. Peru won seven of the 18 qualifying games (including one game scored at the green table), drew five times and lost six games. This put them in fifth place, the best placement for the Peruvians since qualifying for the 1998 World Cup, when they had also taken fifth place, which at that time did not qualify for the finals, nor for any playoff games, as it was automatically for the World Cup qualified world champion Brazil, who did not take part in the qualification, could only drive the first four of the qualification to the finals.

In fifth place, the Peruvians met New Zealand in two playoff games, the winner of the qualification for the Oceanic Football Association OFC . After a goalless draw in the away game, the home game was won 2-0 and a World Cup ticket was booked again after 36 years.

A total of 42 players were used in the 20 games, six of them only once, of which Adrian Zela was only used in the last game. No player was used in all games. Christian Cueva played 18 games after being forced to take a break in the third game after the red card in the second game. Paolo Guerrero was used 17 times , including ten times as captain. He had taken over from Claudio Pizarro , who was last installed on March 29, 2016. Guerrero could not be used in the playoff games against New Zealand because he was suspended from FIFA on November 3, 2017 with a 30-day ban. This was imposed on the basis of a “deviating analysis result” of the urine sample after the qualifying game on October 5th in Argentina. In December, FIFA suspended Guerrero for a year, so that initially participation in the World Cup was not possible. In December the ban was reduced to six months, so that participation in the World Cup is possible.

Guerrero was also the Peruvians' top scorer with five goals together with Édison Flores . A total of nine Peruvians have shot their way into the list of goalscorers, and they also benefited from an own goal each by a Colombian and a player from Paraguay. The table also includes three goals awarded at the green table, as FIFA converted the original 2-0 defeat to Bolivia into a 3-0 win. Bolivia used the ineligible player Nelson Cabrera against Peru on September 1, 2016 and against Chile (0-0) on September 6, 2016.

The team's quarters will be the Sheraton Sheremetyevo in Moscow , where the team will train in the Khimki arena .

Squad

Paolo Guerrero was also named in the provisional squad, but his doping ban was not lifted and then canceled. At the end of May, the CAS had no objections to Guerrero's request for suspension of the ban, so that he can still take part in the World Cup and was included in the final squad. Luis Abram and Sergio Peña then failed to make it into the final squad.
