It was subdivided into individual plots in 1800 by Moses Hodsdon, another survey took place in 1805. The first settlers in the area were Joseph Garland with his wife and three children. The town was named after them when they were organized on February 16, 1811. The first sawmill was built in 1802, the first school in 1806 and a post office was established in 1818.
