The Gmina Węgorzewo [ vɛŋgɔˈʒɛvɔ ] is an urban-and-rural municipality in the powiat Węgorzewski of the Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship in Poland . The seat of the Powiat and the municipality is the city of the same name ( German Angerburg , Lithuanian Ungura or Unguris ) with about 11,300 inhabitants.
geography
The municipality is located in the northeast of the voivodeship and borders the Russian Kaliningrad Oblast in the north . Kaliningrad (Königsberg) is about 75 kilometers to the northwest. Neighboring municipalities are Budry in the east, Pozezdrze in the southwest, Gmina Giżycko in the south, Gmina Kętrzyn in the southwest and Srokowo in the west.
The community has an area of 341.1 km², 52 percent of which is used for agriculture and 15 percent for forestry. The landscape belongs to the Masurian Lake District in historic East Prussia . The largest of the lakes is the Mamry (Mauersee) . The river Węgorapa ( Angerapp , Russian Angrapa ) runs through the municipality and its main town, where it flows into the Mamry.
history
The rural community was formed again in 1973 from various gromadas . Urban and rural communities were merged to form urban and rural communities in 1990/1991. Their area belonged to the Olsztyn Voivodeship from 1946 to 1975 and then to the Suwałki Voivodeship until 1998 , the powiat was dissolved during this time. On January 1, 1999, the community came to the Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship and again to the powiat Węgorzewski.
