Wilkowo ( German  Wilkowen , 1938 to 1945 Geroldswalde ) is a place in the Polish Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship and belongs to the urban and rural community of Węgorzewo (Angerburg) in the powiat Węgorzewski .

Geographical location

Wilkowo is located south of the former Gumbinnen – Angerburg railway in the northeast of the Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship . The district town of Węgorzewo (Angerburg) is five kilometers further south.

history

The small village called Gerolmeßwolle , before 1785 also Wilkenwohl and until 1938 Wilkowen was founded in 1537. In the years 1874-1945 it was the District Paul Walde ( Polish Pawłowo ) associated with the period of its existence to the district Angerburg in Administrative district Gumbinnen the Prussian province of East Prussia belonged.

270 inhabitants were registered in Wilkowen in 1910. Their number rose to 279 by 1925, but fell to 233 by 1933 and was only 194 in 1939.

For political and ideological reasons to avoid foreign-sounding place names, Wilkowen was renamed “Geroldswalde” on June 3 (officially confirmed on July 16) 1938. In 1945 the village was in consequence of the war with the entire southern East Prussia to Poland and is called since then "Wilkowo". Today the place is the seat of a Schulzenamt ( Polish Sołectwo ) and a village in the network of the urban and rural municipality Węgorzewo in the powiat Węgorzewski , before 1998 the Suwałki Voivodeship , since then it belongs to the Warmia-Masurian Voivodeship .

Before 1945 Wilkowen resp. Wilkowo is located on a side road that begins in Prynowo (Prinowen , 1938 to 1945 Primsdorf) , crosses the Polish state road DK 63 (formerly German Reichsstraße 131 ) and leads to Jakunowo (Jakunowen , 1929 to 1945 Angertal) . Until the separation of the Gumbinnen – Angerburg railway line due to the Polish-Russian border, Klimken (in Polish: Klimki ) was the next train station. There is no rail link today.
