Hampshire County is a county in the state of West Virginia in the United States . The county seat is Romney , the oldest city in the state.

The county is located almost in the extreme northeast of West Virginia, borders Virginia to the east, Maryland to the north and has an area of 1,670 square kilometers, of which eight square kilometers are water. It is bordered by counties in a clockwise direction: Allegany County, Maryland, Morgan County , Frederick County, Virginia, Hardy County, and Mineral Counties .

Hampshire County was formed on December 13, 1753 from parts of Frederick County and Augusta Counties, both in Virginia. It was named after the English county of Hampshire .

According to the 2000 census , Hampshire County had 20,203 people in 7,955 households and 5,640 families. The population density was 12 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 98.04 percent white, 0.83 percent African American, 0.24 percent Native American, 0.16 percent Asian, 0.02 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.12 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.59 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.55 percent of the population.
Of the 7,955 households, 31.3 percent had children and adolescents under the age of 18 living with them. 56.7 percent were married couples living together, 9.5 percent were single mothers, 29.1 percent were non-families, 24.6 percent were single households, and 10.6 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.49 and the average family size was 2.94.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 25.1 percent of residents under 18 years of age, 7.1 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 27.6 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 25.6 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 14.6 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 99.7 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were statistically 97.3 men.
The median income for a household in the 31,666 USD , and the median income for a family was 37,616 USD. Males had a median income of $ 28,884 versus $ 19,945 for females. The per capita income was $ 14,851. 12.9 percent of families and 16.3 percent of the population were below the poverty line. Of these, 22.7 percent were children or adolescents under 18 years of age and 13.1 percent were people over 65 years of age.
