Samy Deluxe (* 19th December 1977 as Samy concern in Hamburg ) is a German rapper . He is also known by the names Samsemilia , Wickeda MC , The Big Baus of the Nauf and Herr Sorge . He was the owner of the Deluxe Records label and is one of the most commercially successful German rappers with over a million records sold.

Life

Childhood and beginnings in hip-hop (1977–1997)

Samy Deluxe grew up in his mother's family, his Sudan Muslim father left Germany when Samy was two years old. His Afro-German origins, his childhood in Hamburg-Eppendorf without a biological father and his further life in Hamburg-Eimsbüttel play an important role in his texts to this day.

At the beginning of his career he rapped in English , but he only became known and successful through rap and singing in German . He gained his first stage experience as a member of the band No Nonsens, which had smaller appearances at the port of Hamburg . After this group broke up, Jan Eißfeldt helped him to make further appearances. He gave himself his stage name Deluxe after discovering a Felix De Luxe record at a party .

Breakthrough with Dynamite Deluxe and solo albums (1997-2004)

In 1997 he produced a demo tape about Eimsbush with DJ Dynamite and Tropf under the common band name Dynamite Deluxe . The Absolute Beginner then released the successful feature single with Samy Deluxe, Füchse from the album Bambule in 1999 . The first Dynamite Deluxe album, Deluxe Soundsystem , released via Eimsbush / Buback , entered the German album charts at number four in April 2000 , sold over 150,000 copies and was awarded a gold record . The accompanying tour as well as appearances at festivals such as Splash and Flash brought Deluxe's ​​career breakthrough. Afterwards DJ Dynamite left the formation. In 1999, shortly before the release of his album, Samy Deluxe started a campaign against DJ Tomekk . There was controversy here that he did this to attract media attention and thus sell more albums.

In 2001 the album Samy Deluxe was released, with which he shortly after received a gold record for more than 150,000 units sold. Since this album at the latest, Deluxe has been one of the big names in German hip-hop. In 2003, as part of a joint project with Afrob, the album Wer would have thought that? , whereby the name ASD was chosen for this collaboration . Samy bought many of the beats on this and the next album from American producers such as J Dilla , Diamond D and Waajeed . In August 2004 the second solo album Verdammtnochma! , which reached number two in the German album charts and stayed in the top ten for three weeks. In the same year he contributed a rap verse for the German-language release of the song Dip It Low by the US singer Christina Milian .

In February 2005 he represented his home state Hamburg in the Bundesvision Song Contest initiated by Stefan Raab . There he finished 9th out of 16. In 2006, Deluxe designed a sneaker in collaboration with Reebok and a cap in collaboration with New Era Cap . In addition, on December 22nd, 2006, he published the Mixtape Deluxe from head to toe , on the cover of which the clothes he designed are depicted. In 2007, two more sneakers followed in collaboration with Reebok.

In August 2007, a best-of-feature mixtape titled Lebende Legende , mixed by DJ Mixwell, was released. In January 2008 Dynamite Deluxe released its second album entitled TNT , which entered the German album charts at number 5. In December 2008 a sampler was released entitled Liebling, I have shrunk the label ; Ali A $, TUA and Samy Deluxe themselves, the last three artists of the DLX camp, from which the name can be traced back, were represented.

New albums as Samy Deluxe and Herr Sorge (2009-2016)

In 2009 Deluxe released his third studio album, Dis where I'm from , which entered the album charts at number 3. After that, his mixtape The Last Dance was released in the same year . In 2010 a live version of Dis where I'm from was released . In July 2011 the album SchwarzWeiss was released . The pre-release single for the album is entitled Hands Up . In August 2011, the first single, Poesie Album , entered the German Top 100 at number 63. SchwarzWeiss reached number 1 in the German album charts in August 2011. In 2014 Deluxe received a gold record for the album.

In 2012 and 2013 Samy Deluxe performed under the pseudonym Herr Sorge and released the album Conspiracy Theories with beautiful melodies , which is characterized by a lot of singing and the high use of auto-tune . Since autumn 2013 he has appeared again as a rapper. The next studio album by Deluxe is entitled Male and was released in March 2014. In addition, a six-part television series started in February 2014 on DMAX with the title Male Deluxe . Previously, in November 2013, he published the mixtape Perlen vor die Säue . Matteo Capreoli, Afrob, Megaloh, Ali A $ and Brixx are included as feature guests. The title track Perlen vor die Säue (feat. Matteo Capreoli) was released as a single, followed by the track Exodus . The beats come from Samy Deluxe's ​​son Elijah Malik Russell. In October 2014, another mixtape called the Good Old Times was released. In addition to Deluxe, Megaloh, Afrob, Nico Suave, Eko Fresh, Matteo Capreoli, John Known and Bengio are also represented.

In July 2015 he released the second ASD album with Afrob after 12 years with the title Blockbasta . Samy Deluxe's ​​sixth solo album, Famous Last Words , was released on April 29, 2016. At that time, Deluxe was also part of the third season of Sing My Song - The Swap Concert .

Deluxe Edition and MTV Unplugged (2017-2018)

At the end of November 2017 the EP Deluxe Edition was released , which entered the charts in Germany at number 29. On 7./8. April 2018, Samy Deluxe gave an MTV Unplugged concert at the MS Bleichen in Hamburg's Hansehafen , which went on sale as SaMTv Unplugged on August 31, 2018. It landed straight at number 2 in the German album charts.

High culture (since 2019)

His seventh solo album Hochkultur was released on December 19, 2019.

Private

Samy Deluxe married 2001, the Soul - / R & B - singer Brooke Russell . The couple divorced since 2005. Since then, Brooke Russell has lived with their son Elijah Malik Russell (* 2001) in the USA.

Samy dedicated several songs to his son such as B. Superhero , Double VIP or Dad doesn't cry .

social commitment

With other musician colleagues, especially of African origin, he released the albums Lightkultur (2001) and Am I My Brother's Keeper (2005) to draw attention to grievances in relation to migrants and right-wing extremism . He also shot a commercial for World AIDS Day 2006 under the motto Together Against AIDS . For the World AIDS Days in 2007, 2008 and 2009 he was again involved with TV spots and poster campaigns.

Together with Julia von Dohnanyi he started a project with students called Crossover , in which he made music in workshops with the children and Marvin Willoughby taught them basketball games to promote the integration of students from different schools and social classes. He also appeared on Live Earth in the summer of 2007 . In October 2008 he organized a workshop with young rappers aged 12 to 16 years. At the end of the workshop there was an appearance at the festival for the Day of German Unity in Hamburg together with Azad , Max Herre and Denyo. Deluxe is committed to learning to read and write. As part of the iCHANCE campaign , which is carried out by the Federal Association for Literacy and Basic Education , he speaks out against illiteracy and wants to encourage those affected.
