action

Vikings and dragons have lived peacefully together since Hicks and Toothless ended the battle between the inhabitants of Berk Island and the dragons five years ago . Astrid and the other youngsters challenge each other to the dragon race every day, while Hicks and Toothless explore unknown areas. Haudrauf urges his son Hicks to start a family and become his successor as chief, but Hicks shuns the decision because he doesn't feel called to this role.

During an exploration tour, Hicks, Astrid and Toothless discover a group of dragon hunters led by the young Eret, from whom they learn about the alleged existence of other dragons and dragon riders - and from Drago Blutfaust, a bloodthirsty conqueror who trains dragons for his army. Hicks decides to track down Drago and convince him that dragons and humans can live together peacefully. However, his father Haudrauf has had bad experiences with Drago and orders Berk's complete isolation; But Hicks and Astrid managed to get outside with their kites in time.

In their search for Drago, Hicks and Toothless actually encounter a masked dragon rider. He has the two of them captured by his dragons and brought to a hidden, huge ice cave, which turns out to be home to countless types of dragons. Another surprise is the masked man's identity, because it is Valka, Hicks' mother who has been believed dead for years. She had left her family when Hicks was an infant, realizing that dragons are not monsters but compassionate creatures. Since then she has lived here and explored the dragons. After Valka has told her story, mother and son reunite, and Valka lets Hicks in on the secrets of the ice cave, especially that of the gigantic " Alpha ", the lord of all dragons, who lives here and protects his smaller conspecifics. Haudrauf and his friend Grobian, who followed Hicks, also arrive, and Haudrauf finds himself happily back together with his wife.

Meanwhile, Astrid, who has lost Hicks' trail, has rounded up her friends. With Eret as an involuntary guide, they fly to Drago's camp, believing that Dragos had captured Hicks there. There they are tracked down and taken prisoner themselves. When Drago learns about the dragon riders from Berk through Astrid, he decides to destroy the alpha dragon's hiding place and then Berk. Astrid and the others are sentenced to death, but Eret, who previously saved Astrid's dragon Sturmpfeil, takes the side of the friends and helps them to free themselves and their kites.

When Drago attacks Dragon Island, Hicks and his friends begin a defensive battle. However, Drago has one trump card up its sleeve: his own alpha dragon, which he submits. This kills its fellow species and thus brings all dragons under its control, even Toothless, who is now under the will of the Alpha. When he is to kill Hicks with his fire breath on Drago's orders, Haudrauf throws himself into the line of fire and loses his life. Drago makes his way to Berk with his enlarged dragon army and Toothless as a mount.

After the death of his father, Hicks is initially despondent, but through Valka, Astrid and Grobian he finds his courage again. Finally, they fly with the remaining baby dragons to Berk, which is currently being attacked by Dragos Alpha. He tries again to control Toothless, but Hicks reassignments Toothless regains his own will and attacks the giant. As a result, the alpha loses control of his dragon host, so that the freed dragons take Hicks' side and attack the alpha as well. In the end, Drago and his dragon are driven out of Berk, and Hicks, who now accepts himself as leader, is appointed the new chief by the village elder. Together with Valka, Eret and their new dragon friends, the Vikings build a new home on Berk.

“How to Train Your Dragon 2 delivers technically and content-wise perfect entertainment for the young target audience. The pathos could annoy adult viewers, but certainly not the target group. "

"How to Train Your Dragon 2 is a continuation of the somewhat different kind - new seriousness and new look, but also many familiar qualities."

“How to Train Your Dragon 2 follows the first part seamlessly and continues it successfully. As expected, the story is cheerful and amusing, but this time it also knows how to surprise with sad moments. The dragon population is supplemented by new creatures of the species, which are fun to look at with crazy features and ensure good cinema entertainment. The unbeatable humor is carried by the unique characters that you would like to take home with you. "
