Jefferson County is a county in the state of Idaho in the United States . The county seat is Rigby .

The county is located in east-central Idaho, about 60 km to the north from Montana , about 70 km to the east from Wyoming , and has an area of 2,863 square kilometers, of which 27 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Clark County , Fremont County , Madison County , Bonneville County , Bingham County, and Butte Counties . It lies entirely within the plain of the Snake River Plain .

Jefferson County was formed on February 18, 1913 from parts of Fremont County. It was named after the US President Thomas Jefferson .

According to the 2000 census , Jefferson County had 19,155 people in 5,901 households and 4,880 families. The population density was 7 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 90.87 percent white, 0.28 percent African American, 0.46 percent Native American, 0.23 percent Asian, 0.08 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 6.76 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.33 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 9.96 percent of the population.

Of the 5,901 households, 47.6 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 72.6 percent of them were married couples living together. 6.8 percent were single mothers and 17.3 percent were non-families. 15.2 percent were single households and 7.4 percent had people 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 3.23 and the average family size was 3.62 people.

36.3 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 9.6 percent between 18 and 24 years, 25.5 percent between 25 and 44 years, 19.3 percent between 45 and 64 years. 9.3 percent were 65 years or older. The median age was 29 years. For every 100 females there were 102.2 males. For every 100 women aged 18 and over there were 101.0 men.
