Jeļena Ostapenko (born June 8, 1997 in Riga ), also known as Aļona Ostapenko, is a Latvian tennis player . In 2017, she won the title at the French Open as a non-seed .

Career

Jeļena Ostapenko, who began to play tennis under the guidance of her mother at the age of five, was one of the best of her class as a junior. In 2014, after a three-set win against Kristína Schmiedlová , she won the Wimbledon women's junior competition and then moved up to second place in the junior tennis world rankings. In the same year she and her partner Akvilė Paražinskaitė from Lithuania won the bronze medal in doubles at the 2014 Summer Youth Olympic Games ; in singles she was eliminated in the round of 16.

In 2012 she competed in tournaments on the ITF Women's World Tennis Tour for the first time and won her first professional title that same year, followed by five more by 2015. In 2014 she made her debut in Tashkent in the main draw of a WTA tournament after she had received a wildcard from the organizer . In the first round she defeated Shahar Peer before she had to admit defeat Xenija Perwak in the following match . After winning her biggest title to date at an ITF tournament in the $ 50,000 category in St. Petersburg in early 2015 , she qualified for a Grand Slam tournament for the first time at the French Open , but failed there at the start. As the reigning junior winner , she was allowed to start in the main round at Wimbledon , where she scored her first win against a player from the top 10 of the tennis world rankings in the first round against Carla Suárez Navarro . As with the US Open 2015 , for which she successfully qualified, she was eliminated in the second round. At the end of the season she reached her first final on the WTA tour in Québec , which she lost to Annika Beck . Nevertheless, she was able to finish the season in the top 100 in the world for the first time.

At the beginning of 2016 Ostapenko surprised by reaching the finals at the premier tournament in Doha . After she had eliminated a top 10 player for the second time with Petra Kvitová in the third round , she failed in the final against Carla Suárez Navarro. Then she reached the semi-finals in Katowice and the third round in Rome . At the Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, she was eliminated in three sets against Samantha Stosur . Although she ended the year with six defeats in a row, she overwintered for the first time among the top 50 in the world rankings.

Jeļena Ostapenko with the trophy at the French Open

In 2017 Ostapenko made his international breakthrough. After reaching the semi-finals in Auckland and the third round at the Australian Open , she advanced in Charleston to her third WTA final, in which she was defeated again, this time against Darja Kassatkina . In doubles she won her first WTA title alongside Alicja Rosolska in St. Petersburg , followed by her second in Stuttgart together with Raquel Atawo . The big triumph then followed in Paris , where Ostapenko became the youngest participant in a Grand Slam tournament since Caroline Wozniacki won the French Open at the US Open in 2009 . It was the first triumph in a major tournament for a player from Latvia and the first French Open victory for an unseeded player since 1983 . Ostapenko, who had never won a game in Paris either in the junior division or in the qualification, prevailed in the final against Simona Halep in three sets . After she also reached the quarterfinals in Wimbledon with a victory over Elina Switolina , in which she was defeated by Venus Williams , she was listed in the top 10 of the world rankings for the first time. Further good results followed at the end of the season in Asia, where she won her first WTA title in Seoul with a victory over Beatriz Haddad Maia and then both in Wuhan , where she beat world number one Garbiñe Muguruza in the last eight , and in Beijing got to the semifinals. Due to the strong season, she qualified for the first time for the WTA Championships in Singapore in 2017 , but did not get beyond the group stage after two defeats against Muguruza and Venus Williams. In the last match she still managed her fourth top 10 win of the season over Karolína Plíšková , which she finished in seventh place in the world rankings. After the season she was named climber of the year by the WTA. 2017 She also won the election for Sportswoman of the Year in her home country Latvia .

After a changeable start to 2018, she reached her first final in a tournament in the Premier Mandatory category in Miami . On the way to the final, which she lost to Sloane Stephens , she beat Petra Kvitová and Elina Switolina, among others. Nevertheless, in the following week she achieved her best world ranking position so far with fifth place. In doubles, she won her third WTA title with Gabriela Dabrowski in Dubai and made it to the quarter-finals in Rome before losing to Marija Sharapova . While she was eliminated as defending champion in the first round of the French Open , she stormed into the semi-finals at Wimbledon , where she could only be stopped by the eventual winner Angelique Kerber . Apart from those strong individual results, Ostapenko struggled with her consistency and failed in nine tournament appearances in their opening match in 2018. In New York she reached the third round at the end of the Grand Slam year and finished the season in 22. At the WTA Elite Trophy in Zhuhai, she could not start due to an injury to her right wrist.

Due to the injury problems during the pre-season, Ostapenko found it difficult to find her rhythm in 2019. In Melbourne , Paris and London she lost in the first round and then fell out of the top 70 in the world rankings. She was only successful in mixed, where she reached the Wimbledon final together with Robert Lindstedt , but there were clearly defeated by Latisha Chan and Ivan Dodig . Their results only improved again in the second half of the season. At the Rogers Cup in Toronto and at the US Open , she reached the third round, in Beijing she won her tenth win against Karolína Plíšková against a top 10 player. In doubles, she was able to advance to the quarter-finals alongside Ljudmyla Kitschenok at the French Open and the US Open and finished the season in 22nd place in the double world rankings. However, Ostapenko achieved her best individual performances at the end of the season, when she reached the final in Linz , in which she lost to Cori Gauff and then in BGL BNP Paribas Luxembourg Open 2019 after a final victory over Julia Görges her third title in WTA- Level scored. Thanks to the successful season final spurt, she was able to finish the year for the fourth time in a row among the top 50 in the world.

In 2013 Ostapenko made her debut for the Latvian Fed Cup team in a 3-0 win over Finland . Since then, she has played 48 singles and doubles for her country, of which she has won 31 (individual balance 17:12). So she already holds the national record for the most games won; the top position for the most individual victories is shared with Anastasija Sevastova .
