The approximately 19 hectare large nature reserve Kreuzäcker is one natural area to Upper Swabian hills . It is located about six kilometers southeast of the center of Pfullendorf in the Denkingen district , at an average altitude of 675 m above sea level. NN .
description
The former gravel pit is located in the drainage channel of the Rheingletscher , which also filled the Illmensee basin in the Würm glacial period . At a depth of about ten meters, the pit has a length of about 750 meters and is about 300 meters wide at its widest point. The pebbles that were mined were from the Worm Period meltwater pods, also known as low terrace gravel.
Protection purpose
The main protection purpose is the preservation and protection of the gravel pit as an ecological priority area for animal and plant species that no longer find opportunities to live in the intensively used cultural landscape. The existing mosaic of various types of biotopes, in particular dry biotopes, is to be protected from anthropogenic use and nature is to be given the opportunity to develop freely. The biodiversity should thus be preserved and promoted. The temporary bodies of water are to be preserved as a habitat for amphibians, dragonflies and other water-bound animal species. The land is to be purchased from the land to ensure that it can be used for nature conservation purposes.
